Fair enough. Not my favorite song either, but was trying to come up with at least 7 songs out of the 14 recorded during the sessions (at least enough to make a 45 minute album). I ran out of songs. Although, I'm not that offended by the song I Can't Dance, so perhaps that could replace Living Forever.

I actually like Genesis's Trespass and FGTR albums, though I can't stand Abacab or Calling all Stations. Pink Floyd's Final Cut is just weak for me, my friend tries to convince me that MLOR and The Division Bell are greater than Meddle and Wish You Were Here, but I can't see it. I personally love the late 80s rush like Grace Under Pressure and some of Hold Your Fire. I can't stand post-Tormato Yes up until Fly From Here. Kansas's Audio Visions and up is good but lacking, and I can't get into the post-Fish Marillon or Post-Neal Spock's Beard

Trespass is rarely thought of in these circles as a low point in Genesis' career. Quite the contrary, it is generally well-liked. Hmmm. I love Abacab, like Calling All Stations and the Final Cut. Post-Tormato Yes was definitely hit or miss, but there were some great ones (Drama, 90125, Talk, Keys To Ascension) and some real duds (Open Your Eyes). Do like 80's Rush a lot, except for Hold Your Fire (it's too soft rock for me). And post-Fish Marillion has done some amazing stuff.

I realize that Trepass is generally well received here, but the critic seem to hate it, and the band themselves try to ignore it completely. Stagnation is one of my favorite songs by them, and have dedicated a lot of time to finding multiple bootleg versions of it as unlike most of their songs, the lyrics change from version to version and each one is more profound than the last.

I don't think Grace Under Pressure and Hold Your Fire are the "dark side" of their discography

Don't the critics hate every single Genesis album?

So what? ... Since when are "critics" the "RULE" as to what is good or bad? Further more, the critics are never remembered in history ... except maybe Salieri,. but he came over to this side for a while! Let's see ... we can add Ravel, Debussy, Stravinsky, Mahler, Tchaikovsky (but a rich woman liked him!) ... you want more? ... where "fans" and "classicos" and "idiots" and "morons" (want more?) decided they did not like the music and thought it was bad ... ooohhhh by the way, guess who is remembered in the history of music? So, tell me, you gonna suck it up to the critics? They really knnnnnnooooo music, I bet! Including me! ... you have to learn and live by yourself, not anyone else's ideas or thoughts! G'night! Sleep tight! Dream and enjoy the music! And forget the critic! (Now you know why I do not consider myself a "critic" ... because I am a person with feelings, not a critic!

Since never, and neither did I say so.
Regarding the actual topic at hand, there aren't many artists whose "dark side" I'm familiar with. There are always so many supposedly great albums to check out that it leaves little time for those that most people seem to hate anyway. But of course, some artists fascinate me so much that I want to go beyond the commonly accepted "classics" and check out their other material. And though I find myself agreeing with the naysayers most of the time when it comes to an artist's dark side, there are exceptions. Among the notables: Outside and Reality by David Bowie; Duke, Abacab and Genesis by Genesis; Broadsword and the Beast by Jethro Tull.

I admit I love Gensis "We Can't Dance" album, this is far from the classic era but it's a great progressive pop album imho

Rush's "Power Windows" is EASILY my favorite album of theirs, and "Hold Your Fire" is not close behind, usually being 2nd. I also really enjoy "We Can't Dance" and parts of "Invisible Touch". "Talk" by Yes is another favorite of mine, with "Endless Dream" being in my top 5 Yes songs. I don't think of any of this as the "dark side", probably just the "lesser appreciated" part of their discographies.

haha this has quickly become a stomping ground to bash Genesis, Yes and Rush...
There's a dark side to the Pink Floyd's discography too - i can barely listen to that dreadful The Final Cut, and parts of A Momentary Lapse of Reason are painful... They redeemed themselves though with The Division Bell, the final hurrah before the big exodus from the studio.

The majority of the material was originally a part of "The Wall". A couple of cuts were added to it, that's all.
If you take a look at the material, it fits with The Wall in the story of the parents and the war, just prior to him going to school, and then later in the story.
Some of the visuals that became videos for that album, were also in The Wall. By itself the album is off kilter, but with The Wall, it makes a lot more sense.

But the Final Cut is a beautiful album! It's actually my favorite Floyd album... As for bands dark era, It's probably already been said, but the early 90's are Rush's dark era for me. I can never see the love of Counterparts...

I do have a soft spot for some of the classic 70's prog bands "dark sides"...Love Beach (just Memoirs...)...The Final Cut (actually my fave PF album)...Abacab (I love Me and Sarah Jane)...And Then There Were Three (everything except 'Say it's allright Joe' and 'Follow...')...Drama...The Missing Piece...there's some good stuff to be found there. After Rush released Signals they pretty much lost me as I only found a couple songs I liked on each of the next few albums...stopped following Camel after Rain Dances...
Nowadays, I don't really spend any time mining the dark side of these bands...there's too much great obscure 70's prog I haven't heard yet...

As HtS mentioned, there are so many "classic" albums to explore that I haven't had much time to listen to "the dark side." However...
I like everything by Rush. Everything. Overall, the 80's were probably better than the 70's. PW and MP were released in 80 and 81, and two other Rush albums I also consider masterpieces, Grace Under Pressure and Presto, also come from that decade. They had some weaker material in the 90's but everything they've released has been solid, imo.
I love Tormato. Don't understand how it can have such a bad rating here, it sounds like classic Yes to me, just with some shorter songs and generally a "poppier" feel. But it has the same great compositions and musicianship. "Circus of Heaven" is as cheesy as it gets but otherwise I think it's a great album. I also think that 90125 is very good, although unfortunately not even close to the 70's albums.
I haven't heard any Genesis albums after Abacab, but I absolutely love everything up through Duke; ATTWT is one of my favorites and I think it's a master showcase of pop/rock songwriting. Duke just kicks ass (especially the more progressive tracks like Behind the Lines and Duke's Travels). I don't think Abacab is quite as good but it's still a solid album; I especially love "Man on the Corner", a very simple song but builds beautifully and has a great aura to it, Phil's vocals are excellent.
I'm less familiar with VdGG's catalog but I think their most recent album, Alt, is excellent and very impressive despite the abysmal ratings it has garnered here. The fact that three musicians in their 60s are still willing to push their boundaries and come up with crazy stuff like that speaks volumes about their integrity and work ethic. I wish they had thrown vocals on some of the tracks so I could get to hear PH's voice but you can't have it all...
