Hah!! I just saw M. Night Shyalaman's The Last Airbender and quite enjoyed it. I've seen this flick catch so much negative press, and I don't think it deserves it tbh.
This is an adventure movie for both kids and grown-ups, and I think it works well. Buddhism, 4 elements, spirits and a small tattooed Buddha dude. What's not to like? ![]() Nah I think it's more than that. It suits Shyalaman well to leave the Swoop!-What-Now!?!?-endings alone for once. Mjeah maybe it'll come with the sequel. Who knows with this guy?

Yup. Fantastic shooting. Also, the opening scene does a better job than most in giving you a feel for modern day terrorism. |

Loved this film & didn't see the ending coming at all - although when I re-watched it, it seemed obvious ![]() |

Lincoln
Now there's no doubting this is a very well made, beautifully acted & visually stunning film, but don't go to it if you're looking for a Spielberg brain in neutral action movie. Far from it. This is not a film about the American Civil War, as the trailers would suggest, but an intense view of the political machinations surrounding the 13th Amendment as seen through the eyes of one of the most iconic political figures in American history. A very good film, but very slow. |

Great film - there are 2 scenes in particular which impressed me; the car chase & the battle in the ghetto. Both very long scenes with no cuts at all. this is especially impressive in the battle scene, which goes from a 1 on 1 conversation to a full on chase through a battle zone & there's over 15 minutes between cuts. |

Watched the Ninth Gate with Depp for the third time yesterday. I enjoy esoteric/occult thrillers that have a leading character who discovers a conspiracy or secret as the plot unfolds. Don't think it received great reviews but I like these some what slow moving films that involve supernatural elements (not horror or monsters but some esoteric secret).
I wish Depp would do more drama instead of the 'comedy/action' films he's been doing for years now.
If anyone can recommend films like this that have that strange edge with focus on the characters and some hidden secret I'd like to hear of them.
btw...some of my favorites from the old days are Don't Look Now, The Last Wave, Picnic At Hanging Rock, Rosemary's Baby, etc.

Huh, yeah I overheard someone saying the same thing in reference to Olympus, something like "White
House Down is good too". Weird. |

![]() Rather gimmicky without being that interesting, and doesn't have anywhere enough plot for its runtime. James Woods is very entertaining as one of the bad guys, however. 6/10 ![]() By far the most convincing cinematic portrait of a dystopian future Britain to come along recently, to the point I'd call it a better V for Vendetta movie than the official adaptation! As a work of cinematography and film craftsmanship it's absolutely impressive, but the only of the main characters I found very interesting was Kee the world's last pregnant woman. 7/10 ![]() Apparently this one bombed at the box office and I don't understand why, I think it's one of the best action movies of the 1990s in every way. The plot's half Nikita half The Bourne Identity (the novel came out in 1980) yet more than the sum of its parts. 9/10 ![]() Doesn't have more than the basic concept in common with the short story, and once you can accept that it's pretty good other than a couple rather goofy scenes... until that twist ending, which I found extremely difficult to believe. 6/10 ![]() It might have hurt a bit that I knew the big plot twist in advance, but the plot still did surprising things with the premise and the worldbuilding is quite impressive on this low a budget. I don't think it's the new classic it's been hyped up as, though. 7/10 ![]() Just as much as Moon's in the vein of 2001 and Solaris with a dash of Alien thrown in, so is this Duncan Jones' take on the Matrix and Inception kind of cyberpunkish SF action. It's of course nowhere as ambitious, but I found it pretty entertaining. Not sure I really understood the ending, though. 8/10 |

Olympus Has Fallen
Utterly ridiculous but strangely watchable action with Gerard Butler in an Under Siege-type role singlehandedly picking-off North Korean terrorists that have taken over the White House. Butler is appealing in the lead, Rick Yune deliciously dastardly, and Morgan Freeman perfect as usual. Good escapism if not terribly intelligent. |

^ "Salo" and "Serpski Film" are just sick. Thanks for reminding me about "Martyrs"; I was planning on watching that one.

I didn't enjoy Salo at all, to me it was a bit of a pointless excuse to show a few scenes that were kind of out there relating to exploitation and shock value. A Serbian Film is on another level of shocking altogether. The movie had a point and a moral standpoint really being simply that bad things happen to bad people but my goodness - I love salt on food but that's like sprinkling salt on your food and having the lid of the salt cellar fall off dumping the entire lot on your food. After that movie I went back to watching old Hammer releases kind of longing for the good old days when horror was made to scare you and not shock you silly. Be warned good PA people - don't watch the movie, I mean that whole heartedly - unless you feel like taking a bath for a week in order to try and get your soul cleaned up. |

Saw "Green Street Hooligans" the other day. I guess it's allright, but it is an obvious attempt at cashing in on the success of the, imo, much better Football Factory made the previous year.
It's funny to see the things Elijah Wood tried to do in order to distance himself from the ever-present Frodo character. The one I find the most hilarious, is his role as insane cannibalistic serial killer in Sin City. That oughta show us that he can do other things, but alas, I don't think I'll ever be able to distinguish him from that part. Every time I catch a flick of his - even the early ones where he's just a kid, I immediately cry out Frodo!

If you're on a horror movie kick then these may be worth a watch for you - Inside, Frontier(s), Martyrs, Haute Tension (Switchblade Romance) - they are french horror movies in the extreme category. All four are good but you do need to know that they are more than a little gory. On the Japanese side a movie called Audition is very good. The above movies are about as far as I will push the limits of horror although I have seen others that are way too much for my sensibilities - e.g. A Serbian Film - which I wouldn't recommend to anyone (once you've watched something you can't unwatch it). The above mentioned French movies along with Audition are good though and didn't push my comfort levels too much.
