Signals and Hold Your Fire are some of Rush's best work to date.

For your taste, I think this one might appeal:  http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=1214

Banco is my absolute favorite for Italian, I'd say you should start with their first one, http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=1800.

I would be surprised if you hadn't heard their Darwin!  album, seeing as how it's a concept album about the theory of evolution, with lots of hammond and moog.  Of course, it's sung in Italian so you won't be able to follow the concept lyrically.  Anyway, their first three are all incredible.

I love the operatic singers, but they can be a sticking point for some.

Aye that has supprised me as well ! Darwin - I will take on board your recommendations, can't believe anybody would put any Rush post MP above Cygnus X-1 or Xanadu from AFTK...SCANDALOUS

I should have mentioned that none of those recommendations feature any sax as far as I can recall.

Yeah, my absolute favorite Rush album is Permanent Waves.  I love that more than Hemispheres or Farewell to Kings.  My second favorite though is 2112, so I guess I'm really in the post-MP camp as well..........however, I like Grace Under Pressure and Power Windows A LOT.  I like Presto at the time it came out, but now find it just okay.  After that I completely lost interest (Signals and Hold Your Fire don't do much for me, but at least HYF has a couple really good tracks).

Posted my response to barney before seeing this.  I don't really agree, but I have an appreciation for both albums.  If there was ever one thing I loved about Rush, it was that they never stood still, never stayed in one place musically for long.  I don't always like what they did, but they kept evolving, at least.  Great band, one of the greatest ever for sure.

Agreed. Smile

I can easily see why these two in particular can be frowned upon or just simply not interest someone. Signals has some tracks that can seem a bit cheesy, and it's the start of Synth so that might not tickle everyone's fancy. HYF has that new-wave/neo sound that might turn off fans of their classic era - but this album i rate higher than Signals. It has a strange warmth to it that not many other Rush records have. Geddy's voice and Neil's lyrics are impeccable, the songs are catchy and memorable, and the musicianship is top-notch. I acquired all of my Rush initially through a friend's USB, but HYF was with Permanent Waves for the first physical Rush CDs. Permanent Waves is my favorite Rush album btw. Wink

i'm a pretty big rush fan.  i pretty much like all of it and it's easier to discuss what i don't like.  ironically, i'm not a fan of 2112, the song or the album.  i love the overture and temples, but the rest is so goofy.  when the dude finds the guitar and starts tuning it.  not to mention pearts naive Randian libertian politics.  i think necromancer is way better.

i love the first rush album too.  those riffs!!

more later.Big smile

The thing with Rush - was - I listened to Signals when it came out - (I think I have it on vinyl only) - really disliked it. Then  from that point on - it was look at the new Rush release - oh - look nine/ten tracks all three/four or five mins long - Synth pop album then....make decision not to buy.....
The FIRST thing I look for in a release by a band is the length of the tracks.......
It has served me reasonably well so far I think,,,,,

i liked signals, but after i saw the band on hold your fire tour, i was the same way.  new rush album/tour?  meh.  over the last 10 years i've gotten to like the post 70s stuff more.  i just like to hear the instruments.  however, they haven't written a memorable hood in years.  there are some gems here and there though.  some latter day rush i like:

Marathon*
Force 10
Show Don't Tell
Dreamline
Caravan

*what's absolutely hilarious and ironic to me is that Power Windows perfectly captures the 80s sound.  who'd of thought a pioneering rock band from the golden age would put out an album that, for good or ill, encapsulates a zeitgeist?

also, i remember all through the late 80s and 90s hearing those album premiers on local classic rock radios hoping against hope that the 'new rush' would blow me away.  they'd play the song 'roll the bones' (rap!?) and then interview alex and he'd say it was their best work!

By the way, I have always enjoyed Signals since it first came out, lots of keys for sure.
Subdivisions may be the weak link but i love all the rest of that record from start to finish.
Some people are just anti-keyboard I suppose.Confused  After the runaway success that was Moving Pictures
perhaps the lads should have taken more time before signals but it was still a nice follow up.
But it was the beginning of the end of Alex's wonderful warm analog electric guitar and his brilliant doubletracking
of acoustic guitars...

All of you should take a time out and enjoy Hemsipheres while I figure out what the heck Zuma is talkin about

So true about Alex's guitar. With that, the riffs ended too. What the hell happened on 1984? Did alien I peters take over rock? The change in sound and aesthetics is astounding!

Zeitgeist - German word meaning "Spirit of the times" is it not? - usually used to  sort of encapsulate the current flavour of a culture - Also usually used to show that somethings that are now considered totally "un-pc" were perfectly acceptible only a few decades ago....Having said that - short pop-songs with loads of digital  synths were never part of any Zeitgeist that I bought into......Has symphonic prog ever been part of the Zeitgeist? - perhaps - 1972-75?? It certainly isn't now !!! I am certainly never going to buy any more Rush until they bring out - "Leviathan - Cygnus X-1 Book III".....I don't think that I will be seeing that before I die.....Anyway - listen to the start of "Count of Tuscany" by DT - now that is the sort of music that Rush should have been producing in the past 20 years.....

Sucking on his pipe . . . distinguished accent . . . making me uptight . . . no accident

I'll take Rush, lyrically at least . . .

Yeah, I'm with you.  Though I agree that Rush really hasn't done anything great for many years.  Which I suppose could also be said of DT as well..........

I did say the START of COT....Sigh, Yes the Lyrics are a tad rubbisho, but no more than the lyrical content of some of the flokis bible-thumping rhetoric.....Anyway Count..... is better than anything Rush have done since 1980- and that may be my personal opinion but musically they have done nothing as technically superb as DT since that date and that's a FACT.
The lyrics of COT do not detract from the fact that it is a superb effort from start to finish....
And if lyrics is all that post-1980's Rush has to offer then you can stick it where the sun don't shine....Lee, Lifeson, Peart - true waste of talent and a crying shame....

New album entitled "Desolation Rose" to be released in October. Not sure how reliable the source is though.

Flower Kings.  The title and release date originated from Jonas' web site, so I assume it's legit.
