I'm not really an expert on instrumental prog but here's a few I recommend:

Mike Oldfield- Tubular Bells
Rick Wakeman-Six wives of Henry VIII
Focus-Moving waves (unless you count the yoddling on "hocus pocus" as singing)
Tangerine Dream- Phaedra
Camel- snowgoose
Banco-...di terra
Grobschnitt- Solar Music Live


That's about it off the top of my head. Some of these have talking or wordless singing(except the Banco and TD)but are mostly instrumental.

Of course most fusion is instrumental so I recommend Mahavishnu Orchestra's "birds of fire" as well.

I think the best way to ingest those vocals is to listen to the songs until you find them tolerable. Just kidding! I'd rather Moore have sung more, too. I like the expanded version a lot more than the single album. I give it extra points for having such a cool cover!

Ok, so this goes down as a pretty important recommendation for those who are huge fans of the band, IQ.

THE LENS, which is a project that HOLMES, ORFORD and COOK formed in the late 70's before they became IQ. The music is externally innovative for its time and I have of course included a Sample to the record, A WORLD IN YOUR EYE. this is

If one enjoys this song, let alone the entire album, than I recommend the second album release they did as well called, REGENERATION.

Bay area Psych-proggers 'Mushroom' have some engaging instrumental material out there. Mostly improv/jam oriented stuff. They're pretty good.

War Dance and Electric Savage are fantastic. The debut album featured vocals and I don't like it as much. When the line up changed I believe they toured and then recorded Electric Savage straight off the back of touring to retain that energy/ buzz they had. It was successful certainly! BTW the working title of Intergalactic Strut was Interplanetary SlutLOL



The 2CD reissue of Strange New Flesh improves on the original album, IMO, with the added music and bonus live tracks (including a version of "The Scorch"!).

I always use Colosseum II to show people how great Don Airey is and not just an Ozzy sideman or Force Field participant.

I vaguely remember going to a Dream Theater gig and someone pointing out 'there's Don Airey''. I wouldn't have known him from Adam.Great player of course. I remember him being interviewed and saying that he had some solo project in the pipeline that was classical based. That was probably 20 years or more ago. Wonder if he went ahead and did it?!


With the original 6 tracks, 10 demos and 37 minutes of live music, it's like 3-albums-on-2-CDs! You can't go wrong with that reissue.

Check out my countrymen Causa Sui. I've only heard their newest album, but it reminds me of a modernized take on the second LP of Amon Düül II's Yeti if somewhat more overtly bluesy. I hear quite a bit of Hendrix circa Band of Gypsys, and '71-'73 Hawkwind too.
