skipping the obvious ones like rush, genesis... make sure to check out Focus, Twin Beaks, Porcupine Tree if not already on your list.

THE LENS.
they have 2 albums that are both great in my opinion. A WORLD IN YOUR EYE REGENERATION both great and it is interesting to note That THE LENS are IQ before they became IQ. :) |

THREE MONKS--NEOGOTHIC PROGRESSIVE TOCCATAS
incredible, wailing pipe organ attached to strong drums and rich bass lines. Three Monks even do an amazing cover of Goblin's Profondo Rosso. Listen to this album LOUD and PROUD! ;) |

I'm not really an expert on instrumental prog but here's a few I recommend:
Mike Oldfield- Tubular Bells Rick Wakeman-Six wives of Henry VIII Focus-Moving waves (unless you count the yoddling on "hocus pocus" as singing) Tangerine Dream- Phaedra Camel- snowgoose Banco-...di terra Grobschnitt- Solar Music Live That's about it off the top of my head. Some of these have talking or wordless singing(except the Banco and TD)but are mostly instrumental. Of course most fusion is instrumental so I recommend Mahavishnu Orchestra's "birds of fire" as well. Edited by Prog_Traveller - October 31 2013 at 17:10 |

I think the best way to ingest those vocals is to listen to the songs until you find them tolerable. ![]() |

Ok, so this goes down as a pretty important recommendation for those who are huge fans of the band, IQ.
THE LENS, which is a project that HOLMES, ORFORD and COOK formed in the late 70's before they became IQ. The music is externally innovative for its time and I have of course included a Sample to the record, A WORLD IN YOUR EYE. this is FROST AND FIRE. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JAtlVS7tQQo&feature=youtube_gdata_player If one enjoys this song, let alone the entire album, than I recommend the second album release they did as well called, REGENERATION. Prog on everyone. :) |

Bay area Psych-proggers 'Mushroom' have some engaging instrumental material out there. Mostly improv/jam oriented stuff. They're pretty good.

Having become reaquainted with it I now see why I disliked it in the first place - the vocals! They are painfull to me and horribly distracting. Great playing though and at least the opening track is an absolute belter but then it is the only instrumental track on disc one. The extra stuff isn't that all impressive either although interesting to hear more of Moore in the vocal dept but the demo versions of Intergalactic Strut and The Scorch are very weak and not a patch on the final versions. If I get around to rating it it will get about 2 stars. I am a fan so its complete's my Colosseum II collection so I don't regret buying it.

Check out my countrymen Causa Sui. I've only heard their newest album, but it reminds me of a modernized take on the second LP of Amon Düül II's Yeti if somewhat more overtly bluesy. I hear quite a bit of Hendrix circa Band of Gypsys, and '71-'73 Hawkwind too.

With the original 6 tracks, 10 demos and 37 minutes of live music, it's like 3-albums-on-2-CDs! You can't go wrong with that reissue. |
