I am currently digging: Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz! Please drop me a message with album suggestions.

Hi,
There should not be a "favorite" here.
Your comparison suffers because two of these are folks that will be listed in music history and the other two are not exactly folks that burned up the history of the music much.
Sad to see these brought down to the song/topten mentality. I always hoped that us in this board would be better than that, and understand what "progressive" really meant within the context of music history, rather than top ten mentality.
This is one of the saddest polls I have ever seen! (And I like DT - see the book review) and think that Kansas is way over rated and just radio music!

If you re-read my first post you'll see that these four are the ones which gained the most votes in my previous poll (April 2013) which listed 25 different US acts. The choice was made by the voters, not by me. And the reason I chose four rather than two or five or whatever is that these four collective had about fifty percent of the votes in the old poll. As for the context of musical history, I doubt if Miles Davis gave a flying one about prog or his inclusion among such bands as we all love here. (his first thirty albums were all released more than fifty years ago - before the likes of Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd etc had even formed.)

I really have no clue! I own one album by each of these. Dream Theater's Metropolis Pt. 2 is my favourite out of these, but I don't like their whole repetoire, Kind Of Blue was so influential to progressive music (the album I own) but I still don't really like him or jazz on the whole, Kansas made some very good songs but they sound a bit stifled and get boring after a while, so I suppose it has to be Frank Zappa. Hot Rats is a great blend of so many different genres, and I've been meaning to buy One Size Fits All. Zappa is a genius and has over time produced such a vast range of styles in his albums so its has to be really

Miles was king. Then Zappa. The other two don't really come on the radar for me when compared.

Yeah, pretty much. They certainly were more popular here several years ago, or at least you'd see more discussion of them. I almost never see them brought up anymore. |
Very true...I suspect most jumped onto the DT specific forums, the last two albums are just blahh....There is nothing really new or exciting about them anymore. Maybe Portnoy was right, take a break. Sorry to hijack this thread, but just the other night I was watching TMS and one of the guests was David Draiman, when asked by Trunk he articulated very well why Disturbed went on hiatus in 2012, I don't follow Disturbed music but his explanation was damn good, he comes across as a very good speaker. Back to your regularly scheduled programming!

Be my guest.
Everyone can consider this a place for discussion on any of the four, or comparisons between any of them.

Allrighty then..........
Zappa and Davis are simply way cool ............Kansas and DT aren't in the same league imo....but I would rather listen to Kansas any day of the week since DT simply give me a headache after one or two 'songs'.

Kansas and Dream Theater are jokes.
Zappa is way-overrated.
Miles Davis was amazing.

And both Miles and Frank are massive in the history of the art form. The other 2 are nowhere near. But again, this has become a fan poll based on favoritism, by folks that never even heard Miles or Frank, but they voted for their favorite band.
But it is sad to see both Frank and Miles dis-respected given their amount of work and respect that they deserve, and will not get pn a board where many of its folks do not have the musical open-ness to even realize what it took to create monster musicians like them!
