Voted for BÖC as well.

Steppenwolf reminds me bit of a more hardrocking the Doors, like the missing link between the Doors and Deep Purple, but they were very influentual on early heavy metal, on bands like Judas Priest, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, Hawkwind, Blue Öyster Cult, Alice Cooper and Motörhead (according to Allmusic.com)

I like what I've heard from SW, but BÖC are just in a completely different league. More than just hard rock, not quite psychedelia nor heavy metal nor early punk but this extremely inventive group which has never been quite replicated to this day. Not to mention all the conspiracy/Fortean/mythological/occult references in their lyrics.

Blue Oyster Cult shades it for me. Steppenwolf did some great tracks (love the organ on Magic Carpet ride) but BOC have made many fine albums and Buck Dharma is one of my all-time favourite guitarists.

man... good question... good poll?
personal preference?'
BOC by lightyears (of love)
most influential?
Steppenwolf by miles. BOC were the far better band IMO, better albums and perhaps the best band the US put out there in the 70's (right there with Steely Dan ). They were quite unique which well... sort of makes it them hard to emulate thus they probably had very little influence. Few bands could claim to be arty, intellectual..well.. progressive rock.. yet at their core.. be rough and tumble biker bar band.

I find it somewhat disputable whether Steppenwolf really is more influential of the two. They might have been more popular with the initial audiences of the early 1970s, but with people my age and younger generation Blue Öyster Cult seem to be somewhat more popular as they're more often brought up as a heavy metal pioneer. I certainly know more BÖC fans than Steppenwolf fans.
Then again, the subcultural milieus I mostly associate with aren't really representative of the general public so maybe I'm not the right person to ask. I still do get the overall impression that Steppenwolf are one of those classic rock groups who aren't as popular with younger generations as others.

yeah, Leigh Stephens is awesome. I must say I prefer Steppenwolf over BOC. Especially for their album Monster, and the political title track.

I think you're right. BÖC's popularity is growing steadily while Steppenwolf is regarded like a one hit wonder - like Mungo Jerry. Just kiddin' (but not really).
