I just bought Bloom, and whilst it is a very good listen, I can't help but feel a strong Indie approach to their music, not to mention an overly catchy and, dare I say, commercial thinking behind it all. And whilst listening to it, my nerd sister comes barging into my room saying the singer sounds like blah-blah (a dude who died in the Mississippi). But they're pretty decent talent really, from Down Under too.

I have to say, this thread has hit the nail on the head for me. Thanks to everyone who are posting these suggestions. I was seeking out bands like Cog and Karnivool for the past year and this thread has lead me to so many other great bands.
Not sure if they were mentioned but I really got into "Sleepmakeswaves" over the past couple years. Another Aussie act. They're more Post rock/metal but very good imo. Took a couple listens to get used to the lack of a singer as they're the first post rock band I've really gotten into but it was worth it.

Karnivoolare special, though, and all bands I've heard being compared to them usually let me down by comparison. The first time I heard Vool was like the first time I heard Sting's Ten Summoners Tales some twenty-something years ago. Brilliant technical musicians playing creatively, not showing off, always supporting the main theme of the song and supporting the vocals in a manner that allowed the lyrics to clearly express their intent to the listener. The way Karnivool can weave texture, melody and unique chord structures together, with unique song forms, sets the bar above a lot of the current bands out there (IMO).
I'm thinking the same . Future belongs to Karnivool and I hope that their next release gonna be influented by a new electronic a lot. Less of a rock, more experiments like Asymmetry's tittle track.

Also agree with the singer of Floating me. Important to note that it's not the same singer as Cog though. Lucious Borich (drummer) is in Cog and Floating me. The Gower brothers from Cog have a side project "The Occupants" which is worth checking out.

Kamelot has my highest recommendation. Excellent band that you should be able to digest. You may also consider Vanden Plas, Sieges Even, Seventh Wonder, Votum, and Subsignal. All excellent!
Vanden plas and Kamelot sound nothing like Caligula's Horse or Karnivool. Neither does Seventh Wonder.
I am giving Progressive Metal suggestions with clean vocals, which is exactly what Caligula's Horse is. Of the bands I suggested, Caligula's Horse sounds most like Votum, but I will create playlists of all the bands that I suggested.

Oh my !! I just learnt, from a lass at my work, that Karnivool frontman Ian Kenny is from the commercial pop band Birds Of Tokyo (with that hideous 'Lanterns' song.......) - wow !!
I guess that would explain why every time I cross-referenced Karnivool on any site, Birds of Tokyo would come up. They didn't seem like a very good match for Karnivool at the time; in fact, it just seemed as if these sites were recommending them simply for the fact that they are from the same country.
Since I posted all those bands from cross-referencing Karnivool a few weeks back, I have gotten into The Butterfly Effect quite a bit. I felt like their first two albums were typical nu-metal, and they didn't do much for me. But something clicked later in their career, and the last two albums are pretty solid, espcially Imago. Imago ditches the nu-metal thing for a more atmospheric rock vibe. Something that might fit better along side Karnivool or even 10 Years.
I've also been listening to a few other bands that may loosely fit into the category of this thread:

Also don't get me wrong guys, but what's up with this New Wave Of Prog Metal? It's basically 50% djent cliches, 50% Justin Bieber to me
Some of the labels that were specializing in metalcore in its heyday are signing bands that follow this formula. Rise records is particularly guilty of this. Pop vocals over top of unoriginal djent riffs. Scream verses, sing choruses. Breakdown. Repeat.
I love djent done well (Tesseract, Monuments, Intervals), but I'm not into this new offshoot of the genre, either.
And yes, try Intronaut. The new one really clicked with me, whereas their previous efforts did not.

Oh! – also, other great Aussie bands you may want to check out as well... unfortunately, tend to lean towards the growl vocals. Bands that are more groove/black metal, but crossover to PA's tech/extreme genre...
Northlane Stories In Hearts Wake
From France... Erra
and the new Lithium Dawn kicks butt (and doesn't have the growls :) A great last minute addition to the 2015 "best of" lists.

Similar to Caligula's Horse: Kingcrow (Eidos is a great album!) Between The Buried and Me (the new Coma Ecliptic is stellar!) Amoral Intervals Arcane Roots The Contortionist (my fav of the bunch – the song arranging, chords and melodic lines, dynamics and textures are brilliant!).
Karnivool are special, though, and all bands I've heard being compared to them usually let me down by comparison. The first time I heard Vool was like the first time I heard Sting's Ten Summoners Tales some twenty-something years ago. You may also want to check out: Nothing More (Commercial. Great polished songs. Lyrical content close to the rebellious attitude of Vool.) Voyager (more metal, but another great Aussie Band) Jolly Aeon Zen Chaos Divine Klone Soen (if you like the Arcane suggestion, they are very similar sounding and I prefer Soen) if you're digging the djent craze: Special Providence (djent) Scale The Summit (djent) Pomegranate Tiger (djent)
Agree about Skyharbor & Vola (big thumbs up for those two!)
