I never really was a fan of Cobham or White, though they are certainly excellent drummers. My vote goes to Dennis Chambers.
And, as can be expected from one of the Baldies: Dennis Chambers plays on two albums of - Barbara Dennerlein! |

Billy Cobham, best thing to come out of Panama since the hat.
Not just for his sheer firepower and relentless groove but: 1. The engine that drove the greatest rock-jazz fusion band ever. Just listen to him on the 15-minute live version of Noonward Race on the box set release of Inner Mounting Flame, a track I never get tired of. It feels like Cobham is the wave the rest of the band is surfing on. “Propulsive” is too mild a word for it. 2. Quality of solo output. Venusian Summer is great, but Billy has I think five solo albums in the really good to great range. The dude has a string of memorable compositions. 3. Influence. I'm no drummer but to my ears Cobham's playing has been a significant influence not just on subsequent fusion drummers but also modern metal drummers. Dennis Chambers may well have even greater technique, but do you get a Chambers without having Cobham first? Edited by Mascodagama - November 02 2017 at 05:24 |

I have seen that clip many times. It is WAY over the top. NO ONE can touch that kind of playing, at least that I have seen.

Same as Phil although I've been really enjoying White's Venusian Summer this week. Incredible album really.

One of my favorite fusion albums! ![]()
I admit that one disappointed me. It's not bad, though. Just not as good as Venusian Summer or Big City.
Niacin's drummer. He also played with Barbara Dennerlein. He's awesome. Cobham Part Deux!

I enjoy Lenny White's drumming the most out of the the three but to me Cobham is better than any other drummer I've ever heard with the only possible exception of Bill Bruford. Such power and precision.

Here's one of Cobham. Listen to the whole first song but if you're in a hurry start listening at around 4:48 and let me know if you still think it's Chambers. Edited by dwill123 - July 25 2017 at 16:57 |

Dennis Chambers in a New York minute. Maybe the best jazz/rock drummer the world has ever seen.

Over all for me would be Billy Cobham but in his prime Lenny White was his equal. I think Dennis Chambers suffers here because his lack of identification with a dominant fusion group like Cobham and White have. Sad because Chambers is damn good.

I've always been surprised at how under-appreciated Lenny White is. I think his drumming is amazing!

Cobham.....for me mostly due to his work with Mahavishnu....but all 3 are great drummers and have huge discographies.
