Topic: Strawbs "The Broken Hearted Bride" Posted: August 29 2017 at 08:30 |
With the upcoming release of "The Ferryman's Curse", the first Strawbs album of basically all original material since 2009, let's look back on their three prior major releases in the 21st century. Pick up to 3 favorite tracks from "The Broken Hearted Bride", the 2008 release. I left out the bonus track which is a remake of a very old song

There's no contest here: In my opinion, Through Aphrodite's Eyes is The Strawbs best song since first disbanding. It could have been written for Ghosts.
Then, I'd say both songs from High Seas (Call and Darkest). I like them better here with the full band.

agreed about Aphrodite's Eyes I put action replay as my 3rd even though it's basically just the instrumental "Call to Action". It's just soooo good, and the band has rarely sounded so tight.
All in all, I place the three albums in the following order, favorite to least favorite (probably should be another poll)
Broken Hearted Bride Deja Fou Dancing to the Devil's Beat

Call to Action/Aphrodite/Darkest Night Good one, a bit more even than Devil's Beat but the highlights of Devil beats the whole Hearted Bride for me.

That's interesting. I think its high points are higher than Devil's Beat - Call to Action and Aphrodite, along with Action Replay, are IMO better than anything on Devil's Beat, even though there are quite a few songs I like on it. Looking at the also-ran's, I think "You know as well as I" and "Everybody Knows" are superior to "Ballad of Jay and Rose Mary" and "Dancing to the Devil's Beat". They are operating more within the band's strengths stylistically.

Amazing. BHB, to me is the least of these albums, but I still like it. Different strokes for different folks!

^yes indeed, it's also a reflection on the quality of recent Strawbs output that almost every track, and every album, is somebody's favorite
