Silly poll I know.
Think of it in terms of drums, bass, rhythm guitar vs. lead guitar, keys, etc. (excluding vocals). Lately it's been all about rhythm for me. Bands like Can and Tortoise have been played on a daily basis for the past 2 months.

Pretty weird thing to ask since it's often the interplay between the two that makes things so interesting, but I figure that lately I've been much more interested by music with a heavy focus on melody, and even more so harmony.

Man how come you make such an odd poll that I'd not find in other music forums at all?....
There is plainly no music without rhythm; on the other hand, I'd never be able to appreciate just the 'skeleton' of it...... whatever... Edited by Tillerman88 - September 30 2017 at 15:30 |

Quite impossible to have a melody without rhythm ;D
Voted melody, because it gives more diversity to my ears. Could listen to music with only one bar length notes for quite long and could be still very interesting, but to rhythm compositions I could listen just a few minutes.

Both. A melody has rhythm. If not, it's a bad and amateurish composition. There is a lot of soft and annoying music. Julia from the Beatles is slow, melancholic, sad, but not soft at all.

A good melody with a basic rhythm is still enjoyable while a poor melody with a good rhythm gets tedious.

Being a (try hard) bassist, I mostly focus on the rhythmic side of things. Yes, melody is an important component within music too, though I don't define a good song just by melody.

i reccomend Howard Goddals documentary series that goes into details on how music is buildt upp from skelleton, to organs, to flesh and soul.
first episode is about rythem, 2nd episode is about harmony, 3rd episode is about melody and 4th episode is about bass. worth investigating ass Goddal is a very good prescentor. |

There's always rhythm in melody and vice versa but I obviously know what you mean. I am voting for the first sign of music the human is exposed to via mom's heartbeat: yep Beats by Dre.
