According to one previous post, I prefer Wizard over Cyborg. Thus - Chris.

I'm sure Levin is a genius on his bass, but I happen to love Squire's style, and Squire is good at what he does, too, so Squire it is.

For a second I was wondering whether there was a reason to choose between Tony R and Chris S. ![]() Anyway, these guys can't be compared - there two completely different bass players who would both fail if playing outside their own 'frame' and succeed very well within. Their both great, so no need to choose here.

I'm a bass player, and I always look at it like this:
Chris Squire is the best rock/prog bass player (pick using style) of all time for me, no questions. Someone like Tony Levin might be better finger style/traditionally. They are each masters of their own take on the instrument, and it really is apples and oranges after a certain point. Would you compare Les Claypool to Ray Shulman? Very diverse styles, and I'd argue that even though Claypool might be a premier player, Shulman has written many of the best, most creative bass lines on par wit Squire using a pick. I love them all in their own way! Squire on this one, though!

I really respect both, but it´s Chris to me, much more same kind of style of bass playing as I have also.

Likewise, and good to hear! Another pick-playing player here?

Tony was probably the better player technically , but there was something special about Chris, especially on stage. He was like no other, so Chris gets my vote.

Chris Squire is one of the titans of rock bass. I do love the fact he played with a pick. Tony Franklin's another excellent player who can switch between finger style and pick at will, so there's another example of why bassists shouldn't avoid using the pick. That's how you get a nice plucky attack that cuts through the mix.

Squire. I saw Levin live with Crimso' in '81, and he was a little all over the place (an attractive attribute to many bloggers here, I'm sure). Squire held that steady bass line while adding substantial melodic flourishes along the way.
