Meddle is pretty nice, though with some weak spots, like San Tropez. It's not so much a bad song; just not a Pink Floyd song. Echoes is a sheer masterpiece. That first note is priceless.
Meddle is not my favorite. I like Umma Gumma best and then Wish You Were Here or Saucerful of Secrets next best. Maybe Animals or DSOTM after those. |

Meddle and the period around the Pompeii film was the time when the Floyd changed; its not that I don't like what came after.. for me DSOTM is one of my least favourite but WYWH and Animals are classics.. its that they lost any sense of 'playfulness' after this period and songs like San Tropez and Seamus show the remnants of their quirky humour which is so woefully missing from later work. I think it was the last time they were truly happy as band and actually working together as a 'band'. Therefore, for me, Meddle is as near to a perfect Floyd lp as I think is possible.. but I agree with Squonk that the football crowd at the end of fearless is distorted, intrusive and puzzling as to its inclusion.

^ Songs like San Tropez and Seamus are the ones that put down many of their early albums (just as such sort of songs on ELP and Genesis would put their albums for me), so I'm really glad they didn't do tham any more (otherwise Wish You were Here and Animals wouldn't be my very favourite albums). However, I do miss their eerie atmospheres and jamming, specially live... though I guess they did their fair share of them before Dark Side any way.

Some dispensable songs like Seamus and San Tropez, but the parts that work, especially Echoes (of course!), are magnificent.

I have no idea why some people seem to think humor has to be banned from prog. "This won't do! 'Tis the noble art of prog rock and thus has to be darned serious all the time. Humor drags music down"! I don't see it that way; songs like "Seamus" or "Jeremy Bender" are in my opinion absolutely enjoyable.

^ Agreed, in fact humor used to be a main ingredient in prog-- Tull, Genesis, ELP, Greenslade, Giant, all hilarious. |

For me it has nothing to do with prog being a "noble art" and that any such songs are not worthy... it's just very simply that I don't like them. I don't enjoy them. So they will drag the whole album listening experience, unless it is done in a way that really fits the music and that I would enjoy (Willow's Farm within Supper's Ready comes to mind, since I really like the music and it fits brilliantly). Otherwise, I won't make myself enjoy what I don't actually enjoy. |

Meddle and Obscured by Clouds are my favorite Floyd, however I also love a lot of the earlier songs like See Saw, See Emily Play, and Remember a Day. Those three songs pretty much beat anything on Meddle and Obscured. They're absolutely magic.
Actually, I could make a great album of the best pop songs of the two major Syd albums that would be my favorite, but I don't believe in favorites. I get tired of the long jams on the early stuff, lol. Edited by brainstormer - October 24 2018 at 00:54 |

A fundamentally good album.

The ELP songs seem to impede the flow of the albums. I don't dislike them as much as others and certainly don't feel that the humor is the reason they are not my favorites. Seamus and San Tropez on the other are integral parts of Meddle. I'm not a big Floyd fan anyway, in part because they just lack character to me. So songs like that I find really enjoyable in the PF context. And Meddle is the only Floyd I ever listen to on purpose. Edited by Tapfret - October 24 2018 at 11:20 |

Not a big fan of Seamus(I at least hope the dog was paid in dog biscuits for his/her contribution) but I like the rest of it especially Echoes.

I'm fine with humor but music is for the ears, so if a humorous song sounds so that I don't like to listen to it, I'll get my laughs somewhere else.

I LOVE humour in music. I love Sparks, Steely Dan, Oingo Boingo, Jane's Addiction among others. Compared to those, Seamus is well just a joke that's not very interesting beyond its novelty value. More power to those who can't stop laughing after it but yeah it doesn't do any of that for me. Nothing about prog having to be dead serious or anything.

I don't mind comedy in Prog. San Tropez is enjoyable, but Seamus just isn't.

Let's be real. Aside from what came from Zappa, most humorous prog songs are just album filler.

I think the only thing that devalues the first side is having their best song on the second. Other than that I find it very enjoyable.

TBH, if I find Echoes and Days perfect, I find half of the A-side weak... love the first part, but let's face it the end of Fearless (with the football chants) and Tropez and Seamus are simply of no interest >> it's kind of a throwback to the airy-fairyness of the Syd Barrett days. I'd haver much preferred Axe, Embryo and/or a longer version of Cymbalene (even bumping-off Pillow wouldn't hurt me), then that would've made it a top two Floyd album.
Are you Ready, Eddie????
