Ooh David from Dolly Parton is back; cool!Cool

Speaking of cool...

Bill Withers - Just as I Am: Okay, maybe not his coolest album, but for a debut it sounds pretty damn smooooth. I  mean, I can listen to "Ain't no Sunshine" all day...even a version where the "I know I know" part is looped for 10 minutes (wouldn't be surprised if that does exist somewhere in the 'dark internet'...okay maybe I wouldn't).

Johnny Rivers - Realization: Album cover rules, looks like something a modern stoner occult doom band would try to pull off. The "Hey Joe" cover is cool! Tripped out with new lyrics (Joe needs his mind opened I guess), I was down with the flow. Man, the first four songs are so good, with "Summer Rain" being the best thing ever...a song I knew for decades but didn't know who sang it until recently. I can do without the "Whiter Shade of Pale" cover though. Still, good stuff in this thing!

Johnny Rivers - Changes: That's it for the cool stuff. This schmaltz came between the Go-Go rock of his early days and the psych-influenced later 60 stuff. It's mostly mushy gunk with good singing, but at least it's got "Poor Side of Town", which is a stone-cold classic right down to the "Shoo-be-doo-bees". That tune is a perfect time-capsule of mainstream '66; even that little guitar lick after the chorus works. But other than that song...ouch.

Asia - Arena: Yep, thanks Jim, I went there. Starts off great, because YES, I DO want to hear what Pablo Cruise would sound like if they got turned on by prog and added some rawk to their roll. I liked that epic proggy war tune as well...one of the best things I've heard by them. I was enjoying all the AOR-isms, including Payne's sweaty brow delivery, though the album was a bit long.

Asia - Aqua: Probably wasn't a good idea to play this immediately after Arena. AOR pomp to the max, but with some mellow sorta atmospheric moments tossed into some of the tunes. Payne is really getting ham-and-crotch-fisted here. Yep, a ham and crotch sandwich. Maybe I'll get more into this after listening to more girl indie stuff...as Jay Som's new one is coming out soon.

Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten: Classic OSDM with major technical chops for the time (1991). Fun for the whole family, though Frank sounds like he's swallowing the microphone through half the lyrics. Guy needed to pull back a bit, which he eventually did a few years later. And that's a good thing, since he did sound like a bit of a lunkhead at times here.

Good to see yinz again, David! Enjoy the food and the bazooka moozik.

Tonight an old friend came to visit. She’s been one of my little sister’s best friends since junior high school, and she just happens to live near us, so we hang out from time to time. Back in high school, my friend and I went with her and my sister to a Howard Jones concert, and it’s been one of the defining moments of her life (and her first concert, she was probably just 14 at the time). So anyway, she still goes to see Howard whenever she can, so it seemed an apropos 1st selection when I was asked to put on some records while she, my wife and I hung out for a couple of hours. Here’s the music:

Howard Jones | Human’s Lib — his debut. Very solid synth pop with philosophical self-help positive lyrics (notwithstanding the biggest hit’s hook line, “what is love anyway? Does anybody love anybody anyway?”)

Peter Gabriel | So — that extended coda to “Sledgehammer”, about the last 2 minutes or so, is just a great slice of groovy music. Even if the verses and choruses have gotten stale over the years, that coda always delivers.

Various Artists | Lonely is an Eyesore — a compilation of 4AD artists that appeared in the late 80s. I saw it featured on MTV’s “120 Minutes” show back then and thought it was cool enough to get. Dead Can Dance, This Mortal Coil, Throwing Muses (my fav track on here, “Fish”), Wolfgang Press, and others.

Herbie Mann | Memphis Underground — damn this is a groovy album. Good for any occasion. You don’t even have to like jazz.

Thanks for the welcome back you guys. I sure did miss the banter and sloppy bj’s of this place.

Bit of an 80s kick yesterday:

Talk Talk - The Colour Of Spring
Cybotron - Colossus
Klaus Schulze - Audentity
Marillion - Fugazi (still my fave M release)
Mike Oldfield - Crises (finest 80s album of his with perhaps the most beautiful adaptation of Tangerine Dream electronics in a rock setting. Goosebumps)
Cocteau Twins - Garlands
Aaand last but not least a little summer music that makes just about everyone smile:
Chicano Batman - Freedom is Free (recommended to folks in need of booty)

Thanks Jose:)
Going south eh? Hell you already live in Portugal. Can’t imagine a better place to explore some rays and catch the odd wave...then again all depends on where exactly you live. I imagine mid-Portugal is rather dreary as a surfing spot...unless you offroad surf on mountains and gravel.

First day at the beach. I look like a boiled lobster. Feel like a furnace. Sweat like a Scandinavian porn star shooting in the Sahara. Drink like a sponge. Ahh the spoils of summer!

Three albums on the beach today:
Cromagnon - Orgasm
Guru Guru - Dance Of The Flames
Neil Young - On The Beach
Last one was indeed very befitting of my surroundings; parasols, coconut oils, pink thongs and stale humid beers ie everything to do with a white chap from Canada mourning the downfall of modern 1970s living...stateside that is.

Oh almost forgot! I saw a huge burly man today in pink socks and sandals. Looked extremely quaint and erotic in a very odd manner. My sis wholly agreed with me.

All the best on your upcoming vacation Jose. It’ll do you well I’m sure:)

Don’t forget Demis Roussos was also in Aphrodite’s Child .

David, "On the Beach" is probably my second favorite Neil album after "Tonight's the Night."  It would be the perfect soundtrack for a lazy day riding the sand.

I never went South, I'd like to go there someday. Have a nice vacation, I hope you won't spend it trying to put gas in the car :P

There are some nice beaches in mid-Portugal, David. I'm actually looking at the ocean, right now although I came for the beer :D

Mmmmh Demis Roussos

I wouldn’t know how to rank Neil’s albums as I’ve been a fan for so long. On The Beach though is certainly one of my absolute faves alongside Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, After The Goldrush and Weld. The latter is a double live album with loads of material from his younger days yet wholly ressurrected in a brute almost oceanic manner heavily inspired by Sonic Youth.
I really love Neil’s naive approach to music - sorta like a kid who is open to everything exciting and shiny..and damn that Weld album is shiny..and wild and ELECTRIC!

In-land beaches eh Samuel? Stay away from the yellow ones my friend...and drink a couple of sour beers...I’ll see if I can synchronize a salute in Mythos (Greek beer) and ouzo...though admittedly not a big fan of the latter, but I always seem to remember my old Latin teacher on my first high school trip to Athens trying to teach us youngins how properly to devour said liquid: ‘pour ouzo in a glass and add water till it looks like semen...then you drink it’
Just something so wrong about that picture

Weld is in fact one of my very favorite live albums ever. The guitar tone is just incredible.

Had some fun with my daughter today and she showed me some animated stuff on youtube that seemed like a cross between Twin Peaks and Mr Bungle, psychologically speaking. As a dad I had to discuss with her what it all meant (she understood, she’s brighter at 13 than I was at 18), but it was seriously weird and great. If only she had the same taste for weird music. I guess there’s hope.

Albums visited today

Love and Rockets | Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven
The Move | Looking On
Mr. Bungle | s/t (so yeah, I already had them on my mind)
Mel Brooks & Carl Reiner | The 2000 Year Old Man ( entertainment in the car on the way to ...)
Cats | live musical witnessed at the Fox Theater in Atlanta

Yes, Cats. It’s not your standard musical (you know, with like a plot and stuff) so it was tough to follow. My daughter didn’t like it much, and I liked it mainly on a theoretical level, but it was a nice afternoon together and we’re both happy we went. If only the soundtrack were more like early 70s Amon Duul II, it would have been kickass.

Nightcap:
Can | Future Days (still my favorite album)
Can | Outtake Edition — bootleg of more more more gimme more Can please

That New Order album is a classic. Recently I’ve been enjoying Peter Hook’s Youtube videos where he talks at length about Joy Division and New Order. He’s an interesting guy with a lot of good stories.

Guldbammy Dave popped in!  Welcome back....only one question, what headphones/earbuds are using on the beach?  Big smile

Latest record show haul today and listening to today:
Gary Wright and Wonderwheel - Ring of Changes (a forgotten effort with Mick Jones and guest appearance of George Harrison.  Occurred between Spooky Tooth and Wright's massive solo Dream Weaver days)  Nice gem to find.
Delaney and Bonnie & Friends (with Eric Clapton) - On Tour
Fripp & Eno - No Pussyfooting

Emerson, Lake & Palmer | Love Beach — Like this one a lot, actually. I should listen to it more often.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer | Works Vol 1 — Carl’s side is really cool, better than I remember

David Crosby | If I Could Only Remember my Name... — an impressionistic and lovely bit of artistry. Some of the harmonies give me chills

Fleetwood Mac | Men of the World: The Early Years (disc 3) — live show from the peak of the original band. Crazy good.

Ty Segall & White Fence | Hair — modern psychedelic rock collab by 2 leading underground artists

Anthony Phillips | Wise After the Event — lovely album, and featuring lead vocals by the man himself, something he usually ceded to others

R. Stevie Moore | World War Four — Double CD of works from 2011-2015. The man has an inexhaustible supply of quality work, with literally thousands of songs in all styles from art-pop to noise since the late 60s.

Triumph | In Concert (King Biscuit Flower Hour, 1981) — excellent live document at their peak. Much better than their so-so live album from the late 80s

Bob Dylan | Bootleg Series Vol 13: 1979-1981 — it’s Sunday, so I’m letting Bob preach to me with this excellent package of live material from his gospel phase.
