Rollins Band | One Way to Know for Sure (a live set from the Mother Superior lineup. I’ve heard very little Rollins after Weight so this is a great way to catch up. They always did sound pretty amazing live, and this was no exception)

Yeah Jim. It is awesome. Just having another go at it now at my classic nite owl time...1am.
Usually the greatest albums require multiple listens for me to feel like that album deserves “absolute classic” status.
I’m starting to think it is.
Also it is truly worth saying or mentioning the physical media aspect behind this album and it’s effect on the listening experience. I recommend to everyone here to buy a copy of this Tool album. One won’t be sorry!

Dave - Great Elton crib sheet.  You're right about Caribou. It seems to get slack when there isn't much detectable loss of quality, really. I suppose it's biggest issue is that it followed his monster hit album.

Good luck with Blue Moves. It's his "pretentious" album to be sure, his clearly intentional walk away from trying to please others.  I like it a lot, but I had it on vinyl and have had decades to appreciate the layers and arrangements. It feels more deliberate...like when Joni went jazzier, Steely Dan went into Aja turf, or Doobies switched from classic rock to the MM, funkier era. Just that mindset shift.  Although I don't want to make it sound too cerebral. It's still Elton and his emotion and playing are still not far from the surface at that time. 

All that said, many people dislike Blue Moves/Single Man era, so I'll not be shocked at all if you or anyone else gives it the thumbs down!  Cheers!

Beach Boys | Stack-o-Tracks — late 60s oddball album presenting instrumental-only mixes of many of their best songs to that point. Bizarre idea but really fun to hear.

T. Rex | The Slider — probably their best album. The title track just slays me.

Subhumans | Crisis Point — brand new album from my favorite UK punk band. Saw them in concert Friday night and it was so good. This album is pretty great actually.

ABBA | The Album — very strong Euro pop effort. I don’t listen to them much but I’m always glad when I do

Santana | Moonflower | Finally bought this (on vinyl) and damn it’s good. Part studio, part live, all smooth as a milkshake.

Living In Oblivion, Vol. 4 | Various Artists (80s comp) — from my wife’s collection. Mixes up big hits with more obscure selections.

Musical Adaptation of “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran | Arif Mardin et al — another recent vinyl addition. Tony Levin plays bass. Only the 70s could have produced an album like this.

Tomita | The Planets — excellent! Picked this up too on vinyl. Great electronic adaptation of Holst’s suite. I’ll be getting more of this chap.

And today the wife and I are feeling a little rough after hosting an impromptu fire pit party last night. We’re chilling on our back porch while she practices drawing portraits and we both watch a DVD of the Muppet Show (Season One) I got from Goodwill last week.

I met Tom Johnston once. I was working at an orthopedic clinic and he came into the office as a patient. Super nice guy, and very humble.
