Turn em on, turn em on
Turn on those sad songs
When all hope is gone
Why don’t you tune in and turn them on
They creep into your room, oh, you feel their gentle touch
When all hope is gone
Sad songs say so much

Always related to that song somehow.

Apart from TFS, I also listened to:

Tangerine Dream | Tyger
Tangerine Dream | Cyclone
Rollins Band | One Way to Know for Sure (a live set from the Mother Superior lineup. I’ve heard very little Rollins after Weight so this is a great way to catch up. They always did sound pretty amazing live, and this was no exception)

I have not heard Tangram yet! But I’m aching to. It’ll be a purchase soon. I also have a couple from the late 70s on vinyl only but want to convert to digital so I can listen to them more (at work, in car, while sleeping, while scaling Mt Everest, etc)- Force Majeure & Cyclone
I mostly listened to Scorpions as a kid, I never really analysed their music. They were actually the first band I ever saw live though Smile

You won't regret it Wink I have all my classic TD on vinyl, except Encore, but I don't really miss having them digitally. I have plenty of great Prog Electronic on CD

I'm on a Causa Sui kick lately:
Causa Sui - Euporie Tide
Proud Peasant - Flight
Reis da República - Fábulas
Jonas Munk - Pan
Mort Garson - Plantasia
Forma - Physicalist
Dalton - Riflessioni
Causa Sui - Live in Copenhagen (The whole 2h40 Big smile )

... and saw this quite a few times, I didn't know there was a pro video of it. One of the very best concerts I attended Approve

Kero Kero Bonito - Intro Bonito
Kero Kero Bonito - Time n' Place
Kishi Bashi - Omoiyari

Dave, you might like the Kero Kero Bonito. My niece turned me onto that...sort of indie pop/electropop/syrupy female vox....not really my thing too often, but certainly infectious and fun.

Past day or two:

Tangerine Dream - Phaedra
New Goblin - Live in Roma
Il Rovescio Della Medaglia - CONTAMINAZIONE (one of my favorite RPI albums!)
Sweet - New York Groove - aka The New York Connection (Sweet does some not so typical covers.  Andy Scott of original Sweet does covers of The Yardbirds, Dead or Alive, Lou Reed, The Who, Ace Frehley, Patti Smith Group, The Ramones, and a few others including the song Broadway.  All done Sweet style.  Vocal harmonies are pretty close to the original band.  A very enjoyable album!)

This led me slightly off the wall for some reason:

David Essex - Rock On (besides the monster 70s hit Rock On, a slightly eclectic Pop/Theatrical/Glam Rock effort.  Had not heard the whole album before, nice little surprise, fun.
The Stories - About Us (Brother Louie fame)

Yeah Jim. It is awesome. Just having another go at it now at my classic nite owl time...1am.
Usually the greatest albums require multiple listens for me to feel like that album deserves “absolute classic” status.
I’m starting to think it is.
Also it is truly worth saying or mentioning the physical media aspect behind this album and it’s effect on the listening experience. I recommend to everyone here to buy a copy of this Tool album. One won’t be sorry!

@steve. ( wonderful TD binge. )
@Jim— Incredible Elton John marathon ( I’m sure that took some stamina. Lol)
@Michael— nice RPI setlist. ( makes me wanna dig into mine. )

Just 2 albums tonight.

Tool— Fear Inoculum
Alphaville— Forever Young. ( say what you will, but it’s well recorded and very melodic. Killer synth pop. )

Thanks, I'll check 'em out!

More Elton John:

Madman Across the Water: Quite a shift from Tumbleweed, but no less great. Mostly semi-ballads, but the album avoids "gentle hits" territory by most of the songs aiming for sheer "epic" rather than "syrup". The lyrics are interesting too, not relying on romantic-cliche stuff. The title track was particularly great. Just noticed that Sabbath must've cribbed a fair amount of "Tiny Dancer"'s melody lines, whether they realized it or not, for "Changes".

Honky Chateau: Bouncier stuff with lots of barroom flair, but like an "upscale barroom" in a sense. Billy Joel had to have taken notes. "I Think I'm Going to Kill Myself" is great, never heard it before. Funny how tunes with morose subjects and happy music can work out so well (ex. "People are Strange"). Another total winner.

Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player: Momentum keeps going. More upbeat-paced tunes than before, some glamminess creeping in too. Songs like "Elderberry Wine" and "Midnight Creeper" were a treat, and of course the hits were hits for a reason. I can live without "Texas Love Song" though...not as clever as it thinks it is.

Goodbye Yellow Brick Road: Here's the one I'm familiar with. Yep., lots of famous tunage, but how about "Grey Seal"? Awesome stuff. I don't even have issues with the maligned "Jamaica Jerk-Off" as it is pretty fun. Only "Sweet Painted Lady" kinda sucks. Quite the backing band for this album.

Caribou: Sure the cover is hilariously lame, but I don't see how this was some major drop in quality at all that I was expecting due to reviews. It's really just continuing the style of the previous album, and how is this "rushed" anymore than his other albums? Two essential hits (love "The Bitch is Back"), and cool tunes like "Grimsby" and the one about flying saucers.

Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy: And he just keeps going! Yet another winner as far as I can tell with a monster ballad hit and a great title track. This has been quite a run of albums.

Rock of the Westies: Now this one is a little shaky, but it's still pretty good overall. More guitar rock than previous releases and a cool opener. "Island Girl" is interesting. A top hit, but I'm not sure if I've actually heard the song or not...I feel I have, and it's super catchy and fun, but it's not one of his more ubiquitous tunes.

I'll be hitting 'Blue Moves' on Monday...looking forward to it.

Also chilled out with some of my recently purchased LPs again (Steady Holiday, Julia Holter et all) for a breather at times.

I agree about the physical aspect. There's nothing like the full artist intention for the project, no matter how convenient digital may be. I prefer an album or CD.

And, yes, the Elton binge was fantastic up to a certain point and then was like pulling teeth.  I was harder than the recent Asia binge. But I do enjoy going through discogs chronologically to hear how the albums relate to each other and how the artist shifts.

Dave - Great Elton crib sheet.  You're right about Caribou. It seems to get slack when there isn't much detectable loss of quality, really. I suppose it's biggest issue is that it followed his monster hit album.

Good luck with Blue Moves. It's his "pretentious" album to be sure, his clearly intentional walk away from trying to please others.  I like it a lot, but I had it on vinyl and have had decades to appreciate the layers and arrangements. It feels more deliberate...like when Joni went jazzier, Steely Dan went into Aja turf, or Doobies switched from classic rock to the MM, funkier era. Just that mindset shift.  Although I don't want to make it sound too cerebral. It's still Elton and his emotion and playing are still not far from the surface at that time.

All that said, many people dislike Blue Moves/Single Man era, so I'll not be shocked at all if you or anyone else gives it the thumbs down!  Cheers!

Beach Boys | Stack-o-Tracks — late 60s oddball album presenting instrumental-only mixes of many of their best songs to that point. Bizarre idea but really fun to hear.

T. Rex | The Slider — probably their best album. The title track just slays me.

Subhumans | Crisis Point — brand new album from my favorite UK punk band. Saw them in concert Friday night and it was so good. This album is pretty great actually.

ABBA | The Album — very strong Euro pop effort. I don’t listen to them much but I’m always glad when I do

Santana | Moonflower | Finally bought this (on vinyl) and damn it’s good. Part studio, part live, all smooth as a milkshake.

Living In Oblivion, Vol. 4 | Various Artists (80s comp) — from my wife’s collection. Mixes up big hits with more obscure selections.

Musical Adaptation of “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran | Arif Mardin et al — another recent vinyl addition. Tony Levin plays bass. Only the 70s could have produced an album like this.

Tomita | The Planets — excellent! Picked this up too on vinyl. Great electronic adaptation of Holst’s suite. I’ll be getting more of this chap.

And today the wife and I are feeling a little rough after hosting an impromptu fire pit party last night. We’re chilling on our back porch while she practices drawing portraits and we both watch a DVD of the Muppet Show (Season One) I got from Goodwill last week.

Doo-binge?

Doobie Bros - Toulouse Street, 72
Doobie Bros - The Captain and Me, 73
Doobie Bros - What were once vices are now habits, 74
Doobie Bros - Stampede, 75

And so, another delightful binge for those who appreciate the classic rock/southern rock entries. The Doobies are a band I've never really listened to properly. Of course, I heard all the FM radio hits on classic rock radio, but I never bought the albums or listened to the full albums. They were one of those "older brother bands." Many of us who had older sibs in the old days would peruse their record collections, but our interests were naturally with what was happening in our own circles. So as I go through these, it is not the "hits" blowing my mind, but all of the little gems that seem to hide in between them. Wonderful music.

Above we hear '72-75....as always, those years do not let us down, do they? This is a great run, right here. "The Captain and Me" is their big fish album for the era-1 fans. And "Stampede" is their version of ZZ Tops's "Tejas" to my "always looking for the moon hero" ear.  The album that is a bit different and oh, so beautiful.  Somehow, the odd duck.

^ I have The Captain & Me but have yet to hear any others. Might just do that now.

I met Tom Johnston once. I was working at an orthopedic clinic and he came into the office as a patient. Super nice guy, and very humble.

The Drones | Feelin Kinda Free — modern experimental rock from Australia. Some of these band members are also in Tropical F—k Storm. Good stuff.
