Funny, I didn't know David J actually sang for whatever reason...I guess cause he always looks so stoic next to Peter & Daniel, but yeah, really neat song.

Oh, and as an end note to my story concerning "The Ballad of Jackie Cohen" (has a nice ring to it!), I will always listen to an album by any opening acts before attending a gig so that doesn't happen again.

Bat For Lashes - Lost Girls: Blind bought this on pre-order to get the fancy autographed vinyl. Was not expecting this to be such an 80's nostalgia trip! Thoughts of albums like "Music for the Masses", "So" and "The Head on the Door" popped into my head quite a bit when checking this beauty out. I swear, 80's fever is becoming quite a deal, I'm going to bet that  over half of the professional reviews of this release mention the Stranger Things tv series. I really enjoyed this, some super rad beats going on.

Elton John - 21 At 33: Tricky, after Victim of Love this sounds like a masterpiece, but it isn't all that. I do like a few songs, especially the second one which is the first Elton tune I immediately recognized since the Captain Fantastic album. Sort of hovers between adult soft pop and slightly meek AOR...I didn't hate it, and it was welcoming after that last fiasco, but it's no Blue Moves.

And so, another delightful binge for those who appreciate the classic rock/southern rock entries. The Doobies are a band I've never really listened to properly. Of course, I heard all the FM radio hits on classic rock radio, but I never bought the albums or listened to the full albums. They were one of those "older brother bands." Many of us who had older sibs in the old days would peruse their record collections, but our interests were naturally with what was happening in our own circles. So as I go through these, it is not the "hits" blowing my mind, but all of the little gems that seem to hide in between them. Wonderful music.

Above we hear '72-75....as always, those years do not let us down, do they? This is a great run, right here. "The Captain and Me" is their big fish album for the era-1 fans. And "Stampede" is their version of ZZ Tops's "Tejas" to my "always looking for the moon hero" ear.  The album that is a bit different and oh, so beautiful.  Somehow, the odd duck.

Ahh! the early Doobs were the real deal! My bro played Captain and Me to death, college friend Toulouse Street but I could never get What Were Once Vices off my turntable. "Another Park, Another Sunday" was the song that inspired me to try to learn guitar! And then bleeding into "Daughters of the Sea" and "Flying Cloud" heaven! Not to mention Side One's "Eyes of Silver" and "Road Angel" Wow! have you brought back some memories. Thanks! I even loved/love "Black Water" despite it's being played to death in our HS cafeteria jukebox. Amazing song! Amazing creativity. And then Stampede was great, too. It all went downhill once Tom Johnston left and was replaced by ... by ... by ... I just can't say it ....

Thanks Drew. I enjoyed the Doobies run through in particular. I never figured I'd get into them because I'm burned out with "Listen to the Music" and "Black Water" and "China Grove," but there is a lot more to the Doobies than those.

Final doobage

Doobie Bros - Cycles
Doobie Bros - Brotherhood
Doobie Bros - World Gone Crazy

Phase 3 of the Doobs begins with "The Doctor," which is another track that, like China Grove, I really only needed to hear once. But I heard it about 4 million times in the late 80s.  That said, Cycles is not as bad as you'd expect from the late 80s.  Early 90s "Brotherhood" is the low point for me, more formula, more predictable, more template, but still not a horrible listen.  They end their studio run with "World Gone Crazy," which is really quite a lovely album. It sounds reinvigorated, some different style, guest vocals by MM and Willie Nelson. I enjoyed that one.  Doobs were one of the easier full discog binges I've done overall.  Went down great with late summer weather and a few beers.

Intersystems | Free Psychedelic Poster Inside — abstract late 60s electronics with far out recitations. 3rd of 3 albums they did, all excellent for avant-fans.

United Waters | Your First Ever River - 2011 debut from murky indie psych, almost formless. Feels like listening to music underwater. Love all 3 of their albums. Sunburner is the best album to start with (like I did)

Velvet Underground | Sweet Sister Ray (bootleg) — 3 live versions of Sister Ray plus the only known document of mysterious 40 minute “intro” Sweet Sister Ray. Every now and then long noisy Velvet jams are all I need

R. Stevie Moore | NUN2 (Innuendos) — early RSM, when he was trying pretty hard to be a low-budget bedroom Zappa disciple. These are all instrumentals, and quite rough but the guy can play.

R. Stevie Moore | Homers — more early instrumentals, this time focused on guitar and solos

Sloan | Parallel Play — such an amazing band. Every time I hear them I want to rant about it. And though their highest popularity was in the mid 90s, they’re still going strong and albums like this (from 2008) are among my favorites. 4 singers, 4 songwriters, so each guy gets only 3-4 songs per album so the success rate is sky high. Like the classic era Moodies, come to think of it. Not that they sound like them. This is top shelf power pop, like Cheap Trick I guess.

John Coltrane | Meditations — a rare jazz spin from me. Have this on LP and felt like hearing it again. I still can’t get excited about jazz, and it frustrates me.

John Cale | Sabotage (Live) — kickbutt live album from the 70s with all otherwise unavailable songs. Almost punk.

@Dave re: Bauhaus/David J

He and Daniel Ash split the singing/writing about 50/50 once they formed Love and Rockets. I may even slightly prefer his songs.

I've been getting back into listening to Sloan of late. I had their 90's albums but had not listened to them for a long while. Catching up on their 2000s material though streaming. Currently, listening to and really liking Commonwealth.

To me Sloan is a power pop band that rocks, while Cheap Trick is a rock band that power pops. Both good but different flavors of the genre.

that sounds about (aboot?) right. Cheap Trick is the easiest comparison but there must be a better one. The Beatles, maybe? Ok, not that great lol.

Commonwealth was an interesting changeup on their standard MO, which was usually to have a fairly even mix of the 4 guys’ songs spread across the album. Pentland got most of the rockin singles, followed closely by Murphy, but Murph would often pen more complex pop concoctions showing him as more well rounded overall. Ferguson (higher pitched, sweet melodies) and Scott (darker, stranger pop) would fill out the difference. For Commonwealth, they decided on a double album format with each guy owning a side. So Ferg gets a sugary pop suite for side 1, Murph plays with the time signatures on Beatlesque pop on side 2, Pentland rocks the anthems (with a side order of psych) on side 3, and Andrew Scott offers a sidelong psych-drama on side 4.

But still, I think I like it better when they trade off. The double album “Never Hear the End of it” is a much better long-form expression of their craft. It’s like the Abbey Road medley (all the songs are short & segue into each other, alternating songwriters) over 75 minutes. It’s amazing, frankly.

Maybe I should go on a Sloan binge, I've hit 80's era Elton and took a break, seems daunting to go on.

Chelsea Wolfe - Birth of Violence: Despite the title and cover with her holding up a ceremonial dagger, this is actually pretty mellow and folk-based, though atmospherically as heavy as any of her stuff. What I dig most is that there's less reverb on her fine vocals, giving her pipes a chance to truly shine, but yeah, there's still some creepy Halloweeny vibes here.

Lacuna Coil - In a Reverie: Been well over a decade since I've heard this, but a 20th anniversary purple vinyl edition broke my fast. Quite a nostalgia trip, as I remembered each song once they started. I used to listen to this sort of female-fronted gothic-ish metal a lot more in the early 00's than lately, but I always liked this one, moreso than their newer stuff.

Mree - The Middle: Gorgeous atmospheric folk with extra "dreaminess". What sets it apart for me is the vocals; she sounds sooo beautiful, ethereal but with some serious skill. 4AD should be begging for her to join their squad. "Kiki's Song" is the highlight, just wonderful.

Sasami - Sasami: Former keyboardist for Cherry Glazerr does her solo thing, and it's rather different than her former band's alt-rockin' style. Lots of shoegaze, but unlike some of her fellow dreampop/shoegazers, she not short of ideas, giving tthe album needed variety. Funny how I thought the album was just pretty cool while listening, but hours later, the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to hear it again. "Jealousy" and the crankin' "Not the Time" got the hooks!

The Japanese House - Good at Falling: It's like really sophisticated electropop with future-level production values. I thought it was pretty okay for what it was, with "We Talk all the Time" providing amusing lyrics, but then something like "You Seemed so Happy" kicks in with its guitar strums and I'm knocked off my feet. More modern pop should be like this (cool vibes, no guest rappers, intelligent writing).

Jackie Cohen - Tacoma Night Terror Part 2: Self-Fulfilling Elegy: I know, sounds like a Devin Townsend release, but it's a Jackie EP, doing her quirky pop/rock thing with a bit of country flair. Sounds like a lot of fun going on in the studio, with the title track being particularly busy concerning weird scale-runs.

Camera Obscura - Let's Get Out of the Country: Songs from this album used to get played a lot at my favorite after-work bar in the mid-00's. Hardly go there anymore due to working nowhere near the place now, and its overhaul to a pricier trendy joint doesn't suit my gen x needs. Really good indie-pop, sort of like The Sundays in a way.

I like it too. Was so bummed out when she left Cherry Glazerr.  She brought a very cool vibe to go along with Clementine's thing.

Past few days.
Doobie Brothers - Takin' it to the Streets
Doobie Brothers - Livin' on the Fault Line
Doobie Brothers - Minute by Minute
Doobie Brothers - One Step Closer
Doobie Brothers - Stampede

Quite the bold move for the Doobies to go into that pop/jazz-funk/rock sound with MM.  It is easy to see the 2 camps of fans with early Johnston years vs the MM years, although Johnston did write one song on the Streets album.  I enjoy both versions of the Bros, although once Skunk left it did not have the same appeal for me, he is sorely missed on One Step Closer.  Of the MM albums above, it is sort of a tie to my ears with Streets and Fault Line (have a more sentimental bond with Streets as I saw that tour).  Then Minute and lastly Step Closer.  MM vocals are indeed have that soul sound.  Also, am impressed with Patrick Simmons adaptability to the new style as noticed in some of his song writings as well as his musicianship.
You are right Jim, a fun blend of Steely Dan & Doobies.  Steely Brothers or Doobie Dan Wacko.

After that, I felt a little ghoulish...
Jacula - Tardo Pede In Magiam Versus (love Absolution, gets me every time.  A favorite to play when burning a brush pile in our field LOL)
Alice Cooper - Schools Out (rock meets West Side Story, good stuff)
The Mystery - The World is a Game (I come back to this one a bit, the hooks bring me in)
Yes - Going for the One (Awaken!)
Aerosmith - Get Your Wings (old memories)

^^ Jacula! I need to revisit that. What an odd band.

I’m eager to grab more Elton & Doobies LPs now. I have most of Elton’s early to mid 70s records, plus a 2 CD comp that covers all the hits. I only have 2 Doobies albums outside the 2 greatest hits albums (the Captain & Me, Minute by Minute).

What about live Jazz? I don't listen much at home but I really enjoy a good concert. Curiously, when I listen the same band at home it's never nearly as good, it fails to capture the essence of the performance.

@ Steve - How was the Mould show?

@ Sam - QVL/Tempo was a fave title of my RPI days, though many prefer the first one. What was your gut reaction to that most recent Fiona album?  I think I recall seeing that you had played it.
