I’ve fallen in love with this band recently and been on a huge kick. I love how Hammill uses his voice kinda like a lead instrument. Looking for more classic bands like them, dark and just out there. I’m of course familiar with crimson and gentle giant.

If you don't mind exploring some more recent music, Discipline are just what you need. The singer and main composer, Matthew Parmenter, has a voice and singing style very close to Hammill's, and their songs are dark both musically and lyrically. They are also a bunch of very nice guys, which is always a good thing.

I did listen to part of rogue and that similarity did stick out to me. Everyone seems to love that band here so I will put them in the que!

For the time being, I'm happy to listen to albums that ARE by Van Der Graaf Generator as I've only listened to one so far: Pawn Hearts.
I can tell I'm a fully-fledged member of ProgArchives now, because a couple of months ago, I wouldn't have had a clue who VDGG are, but now I knew instantly when I saw the title of this thread. Smile

Gotta suggest Godbluff my friend, listened to it after smoking some funny stuff last night and it really does deserve its spot in the top 10.

From the little I have heard Audience seem to be similar and also Catapilla but the latter has a female singer. Also, Gnidrolog.

It's just the abbreviations I was unfamiliar with. When I first arrived here a couple of months ago, I kept seeing constant references to a band called "KC", so I assumed they were talking about KC & the Sunshine Band. Smile
