That Eruption section is incredible; archetypal prog rock!

Aye. It would have been better extending to both sides of the vinyl...side 2 is beyond w**k... |

Greg Lake apparently put his foot down so extending to side two was never an option, hence why Side Two is just so poor. Even the playing goes down a notch , it's not just the poor songs. A Time and A Place is maybe the one exception but even on that the best part is right at the end when Emerson cranks the old Moog up. That is amazing but all too fleeting. Perhaps the drunken recording of Are You ready Eddie? might be a clue. Side Two could just be the result of one long pub binge!

I love side 2 as well, yes, I know about some of the cringe-worthy lyrics but 'Infinite Space (Conclusion)', is a wonderful piano trio, which again, is also 'all too fleeting'...

Side 2 is perfectly fine after the knockout side 1. I have most of their releases (not the posthumous things though) and I’d be happy with only Tarkus and Pictures at an Exhibition.

I also choose Battlefield. It really resonates with me.

Dug up an old poll - and I picked 'Aquatarkus'.

Aquatarkus, one of the greatest Anatidaean tunes ever recorded.

It's like asking which of your children do you love the most. A most cruel and ominous task to be sure.
Eruption is a great opener with full bravado on display, Stones Of Years a very nice interlude, Iconoclast, while short, shows the chops of the suite, Mass gets the tune going full prog with an excellent percussive organ section and fires up the first electric guitar section, Manticore provides a gentle intro into Battlefield where the drama is revealed and Greg rips his oft overlooked electric guitar solo until the slow march of Aquatarkus leads us off the planes of death. Now, if we're talking studio version I'll pick Eruption narrowly beating out Mass. If we're talking Live from the 'WBMF' LP, then I'm torn between the rip roaring version of Mass and the truly awesome synth thick Aquatarkus. Split decision folks: Mass from the studio version Aquatarkus from the live version.

I guess Battlefield, though the first two are great too (together). The one I can't stand is Mass, and that one is the reason I don't really like the song as a whole.
