Pholas Dactytlus's bruising and braincell killing masterpiece of pretension and shear over the topness that make ELP look like fucing Camel or Genesis is the first to come to mind.. and god damn do I love that album

Nope! It's my first pick coming into this thread. No reservations, no shame, that album is the pinnacle of what everyone despised about prog rock, and for that reason alone it's an artistic gem worthy of praise! Yes took it all the way. Those boys knew their power.

It's still boring as hell though. Cool

Nah it's just more Yes music for my ears, I love it all Wink.

Fantastic for driving long distances lol.

It's really sh*t for driving short distances though.

I like their debut, "Tarkus", "Trilogy" and to a certain degree "Pictures at an Exhibition". I mostly dislike "Brain Salad Surgery". Anything after that I don't like at all.

My main problem with BSS is that parts of Karn Evil 9 first impression repeat itself too much and it gets to be a bit tiring after a while. Other than I think it's pretty great. I especially like the latin jazz piano part(don't remember exactly which section)and also tocatta.

KE9 is pretentious AF. The whole thing feels contrived. Too preconceived. Too overdone. The way the vocal melody and moog melody match up at certain parts drives me crazy, and feels forced.

I just listened to that album for the very first time, and it is really absolutely pretentious and over the top. It even includes, for whatever reason, parts of a Hitler and a Kennedy speech.

Did I like it? No. This overgrown cheeseburger made me burp. I need to wash it down with a bottle of Bordeaux.

I do love quite a few albums that are over-the-top. But pretentious for me means music that pretends to be something it's not - or alternately, pretends to be significant without actually being it. And that usually leaves me cold.

Ayreon's Into the Electric Castle comes to mind. Love the album, but the concept seems over the top and the campy sci-fi lyrics really hits the "P" word fairly nicely.

I almost forgot! Welcome - Welcome (1976). It's super over the top and the lyrics are pretentious as hell. But darn. It's an awesome album.

If OTT means cheesy and slightly ridiculous, then I guess I will have to nominate Into The Electric Castle by Ayreon (or possibly other Ayreon albums)...

Love them to bits, but yes they're OTT!!!

I never liked "Brain Salad Surgery", or "Bull S**t S**t", as I call it, and not because of "Benny the Bouncer" (I actually like that song). What I dislike the most is that they split up "Karn Evil 9"; that really pisses me off. But the whole overall sound is bland and the musical colours used are dull and repetitive, unlike their other albums.

As for a pretentious albums I love: This:

Another contender maybe. Orchestra and each band member has a side. One is devoted to a piano concerto devised by a rock musician. No one is having any fun on this album , especially the listener Wink
