One of my favorite things about prog is the incredible diversity in the sound of music, but something that has recently peaked my interest are bands from other countries. Other cultures have evolved different styles of music, and after I discovered PFM, and Can, I have been curious about other popular prog bands from around the world, (mainly outside of Europe and the US). If you know of any really popular bands from other countries that you would recommend I would appreciate it.

It depends on what you mean by "really popular." Prog in general is not really popular and the ones who are you probably already know about. Also, you didn't specify if you want old or new. I'll mention a few well known prog bands from other countries beyond the US and the UK though. Here's a few:
Gong- French and Australian members Banco- Italy Focus - Netherlands Riverside - Poland FM - Canada Goblin - Italy Cast - Mexico Magma - France Pulsar - France Saga - Canada Eloy - Germany Triumvirat - Germany Karnivool - Australia Iamthemorning - Russia Le Orme - Italy Asturias - Japan Kenso - Japan Bubu - Argentina Bacamarte - Brazil The Flower Kings - Sweden Anglagard - Sweden Wobbler - Norway Kotebel - Spain Harmonium - Canada Aphrodite's Child - Greece (also Vangelis who was a member of that band) Sigur Ros - Iceland (more post rock probably but some people consider them prog) Not many of these are from outside of Europe but I didn't include any US bands. Also, most aren't that well known but this is prog you are talking about so that's something you have to be flexible with(especially if you want none US and non European bands). Also, I'm not personally familiar with some of these but they all seem to have a good reputation for the most part. Of course what is a treasure to one person is trash to someone else anyway. I think Japan is the country with the healthiest prog scene outside the USA and Europe. Some really good prog artists from there are: - Bondage Fruit - De Lorians - Happy Family - Harpy - Hiromi Uehara - Il Berlione - Katra Turana - Koenjihyakkei - Mr. Sirius - Nuito - Ruins - Ryoko Ono - Salle Gaveau - Tenko - Tipographica - Tricot - Wha-Ha-Ha And here's a few more from other non-EU/USA countries: - Ahvak (Israel) - Aratta Rebirth (Armenia) - Decibel (Mexico) - Satanique Samba Trio (Brazil) - Sloche (Canada)

Hi, I started to have that feeling that we gave many bands the "progressive" this or that, as a way to help them dig up a few more fans ... in those early days, we did not exactly consider these things "progressive". but new bands that were doing things that were not within the commercial interest of the record companies and "contracts" designed to make sure you never play a long cut again! That said, the list is fantastic ... I would add: Sadistic Mika Band - Japan (1st album is different!) Amon Duul 2 - Germany Guru Guru - Germany Carmen - America (deserves mention because they are NOT what we consider an American band at all!) PFM - Italy Granada - Spain Kayak - Netherlands Egberto Gismonti - Brazil Also important in these lists are a couple of things from ECM. Terje Rypdal was always considered "jazz" for some reason, but a lot of his work crosses the line into ambient and jazz and some rock. Jan Garbarek in his experimental period is awesome with things like Eventyr. Egberto Gismonti's 70's material is all fantastic and very progressive, and I don't think it should be considered "jazz" at all. And there are many more ECM things not mentioned that deserve a good listen!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

I didn't mention PFM because he already did. I didn't see the point of mentioning them again. Since he likes Can he might like the first two you mentioned.

To add two countries apparently not yet listed: There's Sonar and Schnellertollermeier from Switzerland, and Iva Bittova and Dunaj from the Czech Republic.
