Your favorite future dystopian movie. Mine is Soylent Green, followed by Logan's Run.

I ain't called Logan for nothing (that is for Logan's Run). Still, I'll say Zardoz or A Boy and His Dog. Brazil maybe. A Clockwork Orange if it counts would be my favourite. Fahrenheit 451. Really like Metropolis. Delicatessen, or that feels more post-apocalyptic.
Also like Soylent Green. ZPG is another of a similar ilk I like. And Alphaville. Edited by Logan - May 26 2021 at 05:41 |

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I observed before. It can be much like that with music for me; immersed in experiencing the moment.

The Matrix is too terrible. One cannot even hate the machines...

Metropia (2009) is quite an intriguing movie. I prefer a utopian world, but if I had to exist in a dystopian world, the "Metropian" one would be fun.

Soylent Green is a great one, indeed. I very much like Saul Bass' Phase IV too...

Fahrenheit 451 and 1984 (1984 version). They complement each other nicely.
I haven't seen Logan's run, but it's on TV here in a few days.

"Soylent Green" was the only SF-movie my late father liked. He used to say: "This is how it will be in the future". Hard to say. Probably "Silent Running".

Talking about 12 Monkeys (great film indeed!), the short film by Chris Marker upon which it is based, La Jetée (The Pier), is actually quite brilliant!

Yes, agree about the pre Star Wars time. Look at Lucas himself and compare Star Wars to one I forgot to mention, THX-1138. By the way, dystopias is it be of my favourite subject matters in film and novels. Its more down to Earth and I can connect with it much more than the Star Wars universe. I commonly genuinely care and empathise with the characters. Something like Logan's Run is dark, but it has hope too. I think that film is very underrated by many. |

Together with The Matrix (1999), Planet of the Apes (1968) also portrays a really scary dystopian world; albeit very differently.
In the first, you cannot even hate your enemies. They are machines. Also you have nobody else but your race/ancestors to blame for your situation, as "you" created those machines and the AI. The worst thing is; the people, albeit except for the "awakened ones", are not even aware that the machines are farming them. The whole situation is the epitome of extreme terribility! In the latter, being the prisoners of the apes... Imagine that an intelligent and skilled aquatic alien race put you in a terrarium, for their amusement and pleasure... I think we all should be kind to animals... So that we can have valid reasons for blaming our probable prospective alien masters! ![]() |

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the 1956 version) Metropolis Cloud Atlas Zardoz 12 Monkeys Alphaville Welt am Draht (World on a Wire) and a movie that is not really dystopian but kind of "dystopia in the making": Phase IV. it is a bit unclear what the ants want, but perhaps they want to take over the earth and need 2 humans for close study of the future enemy
