I guess, no other Jazz-Rock can beat Birds of Fire to me, while I find The Romantic Warrior too polished and synthetic, and I think, too Pop-influenced - but I'm very fond of Where Have I Known You Before (1973). Edited by David_D - September 25 2022 at 12:21 |

Birds of Fire.......(and I prefer Hymn of the 7th Galaxy over Romantic Warrior.)

While I enjoy the early years of Return to Forever, Romantic Warrior comes across as the opposite of everything I love about their earlier music. I liked that early RTF and Weather Report seemed to be less about technique, showing off skills, playing really fast etc... and they both spoke to me more than Mahavishnu Orchestra. But Romantic Warrior feels more noodly, sterile, utterly empty and pointless than just about everything else I've heard by all three bands. On top of that I think it's sounds kind of ugly. At least Birds of Fire has some genuine bite and grit to it. And when they decide to slow down, it's really quite stunning. Not the biggest fan, but Birds of Fire it is.

Hi,
This poll is kind of scary for me. Both works, and bands, were too great and far out, and feeling like making a fun competition from them, is a bit scary for me. They are very different "trips" in that the RTF material is much more seriously composed, while I think that the Mahavishnu material had a lot more improvised moments, or moments that allowed the guitar some serious freedom. In that sense, Mahavishnu is better for me, since RTF returned to a "theme" or "riff" that gave each of their pieces their very valuable personality. Having seen RTF with Ponty, makes me want to choose RTF. But in watching a few concerts on various locations of the stuff Mahavishnu did, is also a treat for the senses, and in many ways more aligned with what we think "progressive" meant in the early days, before it all just became some sort of really tight and clean "fusion", which I am not sure that Mahavishnu was at all. It is, for me, one of the toughest choices of all ... and if I had to choose a concert to go see at the time, instead of seeing RTF 35 years later, I would have a terrible time choosing and probably would not go to either. The members of RTF, however, had already made their names within the jazz area of things, which in many ways, is not exactly an area for Mahavishnu in my ears. But the musicianship in both, is tops all around ... to the point that I can not even conceive of one being better than the other. They are both outstanding!

Both playing and serious. I just happened to recently bump the poll where you wrote that before, and that phrase always stayed with me. I genuinely like it, was amused by it, and am glad to get the chance to use it. At the time I was trying to think of a witty and amiable response to say in return, but I couldn't think of anything satisfyingly jocular. It just made me smile at the time and stayed with me. Strange what can really resonate with someone. EDIT: I did quote it as an in-joke thinking that because I had responded to the old poll, you might have read your comment again and had your memory refreshed, but then decided to explain since the context might be lost and it is less likely to confuse. See CLIcK. My response to your comment was cringe-worthily lame. I had written something else that was meant to be funny at that time, but then I thought it might be seen as sarcastic rather than the good natured kidding around I intended so I changed my message. I probably remembered better because you wrote that and I responded on my birthday, and I had had some lovely happy birthday messages and was in very high spirits while being a little high on spirits. Yeah, I'm sure that's part of why it was so memorable to me. A little negativity acted as something of an amusing antitode or contrast to whatever birthday wishes I had received. As for these albums, neither have really done it for me. It has been ages since I last listened to either. Your Mwandishi and Miles Davis polls were right up my alley, however. Coffee isn't hitting yet so I'm confused AF if you're trolling/arguing or complementing my statement and want that as an option for future polls...?

Just to add a bit of context to the quote, you posted "I don't care for either song, personally!" in one of my polls and I long have wanted to use it. The addition of the exclamation mark to conclude the tautology made it rather unusual and very memorable to me. Edited by Logan - October 04 2021 at 23:45 |

Romantic Warrior shreds harder, courtesy of Al Di Meola. Birds Of Fire is incredible too, but it's more abstract. I guess I just dig more conventional fusion.

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

Needs a "both" option.
![]() If the RTF choice was Where Have I Known You Before then it would be much easier.

Birds.
The guitar, the guitar, the guitar.. important album for me; the raw and fierce jazz guitar. So give me the McLaughlin - Cobham duo on this one.

I can't handle the synths on Romantic Warrior, besides Birds of Fire is more my style.
