I'm very impressed by the 2021 album Ske - Insolubilia. I'd insert this probably at rank 6 before Dedalus, if not higher.

I just had a look through this thread and can't see any mention of my favourite Italian bands, so I'd like to throw 3 more albums into the mix:

Areknames - Love Hate Round Trip
Daal - Decalogue of Darkness
Dark Quarterer - The Etruscan Prophecy

I'm in the midst of listening to (and getting to like a lot!) a TON of RPI that I haven't heard [enough of] yet-- Cherry Five, Il Volo, Maxophone, Locanda Delle Fate, Cincinnato, Arti E Mestieri, Eneide, Il Bachio della Medusa  and Mad Crayon. What I have heard of these bands is great stuff! but my opinion of how they compare to what I already know is still "under construction".

Here's how I rate the Italian bands I'm already familiar with (1 album per band,)...

1. PFM  -  Per Un Amico
2. Il Baletto Di Bronzo  -  Ys
3. Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso  -  Darwin!
4. Museo Rosenbach  -  Zarathustra (prefer 2012 version)
5. Osanna  -  Paleopoli
6. Alphataurus  -  Alphataurus
7. Area  -  Arbeit Macht Frei
8. Dedalus  -  (original)
9. Franco Battiato  -  Sulle Corde di Aires
10. Le Orme  -  Felona E Sorona
11. DFA - Work In Progress (live)
12. Universal Totem Orchestra  -  Mathematical Mother (Italian Zeuhl)
13. Goblin  -  Roller
14. New Trolls  -  Concerto Grosso Trilogy (Live)
15. 3 Monks  -  Neogothic Progressive Toccattas

I find it the same way - but see my top 160 list all-time based on all the ratings on RYM and PA for an exactly view of the matter in question, if you're interested. On this list are 15 Italian albums.

Edit:
- but one more very important thing to add here. My list consists only of one album per band so, there are a number of the highest rated albums which are not included in it.

I am sure there are some exceptions from this rule. Smile
I see plenty albums from new millennium that are on the top of PA highest rated Italian list. I don't dislike them, but I wouldn't put them on my Top list. The same with few highly regarded classics like:
Biglietto Per l'Inferno - s/t
Il Balletto di Bronzo - YS.
I don't care for the vocals on both albums. Too much screaming for my taste. Again, they are fine albums, I don't dislike them but I don't consider them as my favorites.

Part 2 then of my favorite Italian prog albums. I'd rate them as high as the albums from Part 1 listed above. Btw my favorite prog scene after British prog. After that Germany, France, Netherlands and probably Sweden because of few retro-prog bands that I really like.

Alphataurus - Alphataurus (1973)
Area - Arbeit Macht Frei (1973)
Area - Crac! (1975)
Arti + Mestieri - Giro Di Valzer Per Domani (1975)
Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Banco del Mutuo Soccorso (1972)
Banco del Mutuo Soccorso - Io Sono Nato Libero (1973)
Celeste - s/t aka Principe Di Un Giorno (1976)
Corte dei Miracoli - Corte dei Miracoli (1976)
Finisterre - In Limine (1996)
Genfuoco - Dentro l'Invisibile (1979)
Metamorfosi - Inferno (1972)
Museo Rosenbach - Zarathustra (1973)
Orme, Le - Felona e Sorona (1973)
Orme, Le - Uomo di Pezza (1972)
Pierrot Lunaire - Pierrot Lunaire (1974)
Premiata Forneria Marconi - L'Isola di Niente (1974)
Premiata Forneria Marconi - Storia Di Un Minuto (1972)
Quella Vecchia Locanda - Il Tempo della Gioia (1974)
Semiramis - Dedicato A Frazz (1973)
Universal Totem Orchestra - Rituale Alieno (1999)

You're always very much welcomed to add some more. The mentioned number is only a suggestion.

Haven't heard Apoteosi, but this.
Foolishly forgot about Maxophone and RDM's Contamination.

Hi,

Again, I don't do albums, and I think I have not heard enough of the things listed. I'll make a decent effort to catch up!

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso
Le Orme
Premiata Forneria Marconi
Biglietto/Baffo Banfi
Franco Battiato
Goblin
Sensation's Fix
Osanna

The saddest bit for me, was the mention of OSANNA in one other post. One of the bands that helped define this genre, and the band that PG copied when his group toured Italy with them, and they are still around, although (have to check) not quite as complete as they were then, or as theatrical.

Their doing this, also helped ANGE do their thing, although theirs is more centered on Brecht and Brel in the early days, but both DEcamps never lost their theatricality in their music. I'm not sure about OSANNA's versions, as I am not as familiar with Italian Literature and the arts, other than a whole bunch of operas ... gads ... we should do a poll on that!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
