During 2021 Neal Morse found himself writing several acoustic songs which would lend themselves to a three-part harmony treatment such as used by Crosby Stills Nash and Young and similar bands. He invited his old friend and former Spock's Beard bandmate, Nick D'Virgilio to join him in the new project. Ross Jennings of the band Haken was then invited to join. The resulting album, named Troika, was recorded remotely with the three musicians never present in the same room, and was released in February 2022.

My early impression is that this is a seriously good album. Rock-solid vocal harmonies, good melodies, great batch of songs. There's also an air of the most breezy Kansas floating over, not bad at all.

Any other samples? Via their Youtube samples, I cannot accept them as a progressive rock combo.

This isn't prog imo. It's really good though.

May I point out that these three are members of some of Prog rock’s biggest acts. May I also point out that every single other digital and print outlet which specialises in prog has featured this album.
It would be, in my opinion, yet another huge blow to the credibility of this site if this album were not added and made available for review to members such as Alan because of overly pedantic definitions of what constitutes progressive rock.

Not in the slightest, no. A very serious point - see the collab zone.

Hi,
Is it OK to post a contrary view? I don't want to hurt the "fans" that follow these folks. I do think that there are a lot of things and bands out there which stand out way better and deserve more attention than someone that puts something together simply because they have the name to sell it!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

you are not wrong, but this is not the place to do it. This is just a suggestion thread, like any other. Maybe this band will be added, maybe not. It gets just that much attention like any other suggested band.

Bump, bump, bumpity bump.
I gather that this has gone to the dusty vaults of the admin zone for the sages there to decide upon prog related. Any update, please?

It may take a while for this project to be added (or not).

PLEASE READ FIRST - Artist Submission Procedure
EDIT: Just to add that people making or enquiring about PR suggestions should also be familiar with the I don't think that PR suggestions should be rushed, and if one is really keen on reviewing it, there are other sites to do so. Here is the listing at rateyourmusic: https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/dvirgilio-morse-jennings/troika-1/ where it already has garnered six ratings but no reviews yet.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

^ Thanks, and 42 ratings there. The music I have listened to so far does not convince me that this is a good musical fit for a Prog site, even in related, but that’s my opinion. As progressive folk, I find Nick Drake’s River Man more relevant, for instance, I will listen to the whole album at some time., but I hope there is more to this being relevant to the site than the personnel having some Prog involvement. Traditionally, I should be swayed or not by the arguments that have been presented (especially from an SC who is championing it) but I have not seen that SC appraisal, nor do I find this thread convincing. It’s a no from me for now based on what arguments have been given and material proferred, but then I haven’t been provided with the whole album to listen to, nor have I been offered a case that compels me. Having a Prog personnel relation on its own is not that strong, and I don’t know what beyond that people see here (nor do I see a consensus or the PA forum members generally getting really behind this). If a response is expected now, then it would be no from me based on what limited materials have been presented, my listening, and the arguments I have seen.

Well, I am not party to the SC championing this, as I do not have access to those hallowed halls. I have, though, especially in the collab zone, championed this more as a reputational issue for PA, as opposed to whether it fits a narrow definition of a prog sub-genre or “prog related”, which was always, from the very word go, a click-bait thing from M@X to attract visitors to the site. At the risk of repeating myself, and sorry to be a bore, my only issue here is that EVERY major prog site and journal has reviewed this album. Excepting, as usual, PA because of a bureaucracy which sometimes puts the civil service too shame. BTW, the fact is that these three have far more than “some” prog involvement. They are members of three of the biggest bands of the past twenty years, or so, and side projects to boot. More than enough for prog-related. All of this is sheer pedantry, and it really does us no good at all. (Laz exits stage left, retires to his pit, and awaits the inevitable bollocking again.)

And where are the links to all of those? An airtight case with lots of evidence should be presented. We have not even been given the album to appraise. There is an expected form to PR submissions, did you read that? You can resume this in the Collab Prog Related discussion thread and present all of your evidence and best arguments there. I’m locking this one.
Here is the link as I note you did not present a case there: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=29489&PN=35 And it’s not sheer pedantry, it’s a process. If you don’t like it, find a site where you do. EDIT:I will reopen this, and sorry if I seem snarky. I meant that for PR, it tends to be the arguments that make the case, and more effort commonly has been required to convince. Those notes on procedure are to inform all, and indeed this process will not appeal to all, but it was partially to limit PR additions (made it so it's tough to get in and requires more effort). I have listened through the album now. I do get some Kansas vibes and some CSNY in the vocals, and while it does get quite rock in parts, it does not convince me as being an album that should be added to PA. When we as a team, please be patient as we all have other things on our plates, do make a final decision we will let people know (I'll try to remember to PM Alan then about the status of his submission). Thanks. Edited by Logan - March 22 2022 at 06:58 |
