No, I wouldn't say so. The Mountain Queen (1973) has almost got 400 ratings on RYM, and a rather high average (3,74).

Happy New Year!

Even so, I doubt if there are many people outside of the progosphere who will have heard of Alquin. It's still shocking to think that the only Dutch bands I knew before discovering ProgArchives back in 2010 were Focus, Golden Earring and Shocking Blue.  Embarrassed

HI,

On the other post I wrote that I thought I heard some Zappa influences, and guess what ... it's right here on this one. And, to top it off, it's as good as the originals by Frank, and in so many ways a heck of a compliment to not only understand the music and its exposition, but also how to make it your own expression and moment ... and this piece ... is just that. Phenomenal, and should be in every "progressive" collection. You won't find a better "rendition" of FZ than what is here.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Hi,

Lovely stuff and Supersister were in Space Pirate Radio right from the start and it was fun stuff to listen to, at the time, maybe a bit stoned, but all in all, it was just great stuff. And this live piece is fantastic, and just shows the greatness of the musicians and the work.

Listening to it TODAY, some 47 or 48 years later, the weird thing is that I hear some Frank Zappa, and the kind of design in the music that Frank seemed to favor a few times by allowing a moment to extend, or a particular musician to explore the feeling a bit more.

I would love to see more of this in some of the blogs showing us new bands, so many of which only do the same thing that has been done before. You have to hear for yourself, not someone else I like to say, and stuff like this is more aligned with the creative areas of free from music, than it is with anything else.

Beautiful stuff ... incredible performance!

To make it complete, let me introduce you to Machine, a band which released only one album (their previous moniker, Swinging Soul Machine, excluded), in 1970: a nice StarStarStarStar release. I tried to get this band included here (in Crossover or Eclectic), some 10 years ago, but they were rejected. Maybe they fit better in Heavy or Prog Related.

The 4th track, starting at 10:45, has the most beautiful intro ever (imho).

Thanks for letting me know about Dutch prog band, Machine. I bought the CD album recently from Oxfam Music in West Bridgford for just Ł3. Thumbs Up

At Last! It's the final band in this blog (57 artists & 248 albums later) and after Zoo, it's right back to the beginning of the alphabet again for After Tea - a Dutch band I only discovered last week when I bought their second album on CD from Oxfam Music in West Bridgford. Thumbs Up

A short-lived band who got together to record one funky album before two members skipped off to form the band Kangaroo. Listen out for the Beatles' tribute medley. Thumbs Up

There's no sign of Van Otterdyke's one and only album on YouTube, so maybe it's just Hiding in the Dark. Confused

I'm on a roll with this blog at the moment with just four more bands to go after Thomas Flinter: an obscure Jazz-Rock band, named after an even more obscure Dutch troubadour from the Middle Ages.

Wally Tax (1948-2005) isn't exactly a household name (even in his native Holland), but he's the man behind this one-off album by the cunningly titled band, Tax Free, and if this isn't the finest Jazz-Rock album you've never heard, then I'm a Dutch uncle. Smile
