When it comes to the best Canterbury Scene music, I think you'll agree the year 1972 is Better by Far! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Edited by Psychedelic Paul - January 08 2024 at 06:30 |

Seems Canterbury peaked in 1971, but blenty of gems from this year as well. The World of Genius Hans over Pudding en Gisteren and Fifth. Matching Mole, Continental Circus and Waterloo Lily are nice as well.

I'm going with Little Red Record over Pudding en Gisteren and The World of Genius Hans. Also very into the Matching Mole self-titled and Khan's album. All of those have been favourites of mine. Paul, I would have expected you to at least somewhat prefer Matching Mole's self-titled to Little Red Record. Maybe you do, those star ratings are quite blunt tools -- lacking the nuances that can be expressed in reviews, of course, and some would say having scale of 1 to 10, or 1 to 100.....
as for best year, I don't know. All of the classic Canterbury Scene years have albums that I love, and quite a few of the non-classic years when it comes to Canterbury Sound. |

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Sorry, I'm just not a fan of Matching Mole. I listened to both albums in their entirety sometime ago, despite wanting to bury my head in the ground, and on a scale of 1 to 10, I give both albums a matching mole score of 3 out of 10, or 4 out of 10 (at most) if I'm being generous. ![]() I realised our musical tastes are at opposite ends of the prog spectrum when you said you liked the music of Current 93.

I have been listening to Fifth only recently and it's still excellent despite the departure of Wyatt. It was tough choice deciding between this and Matching Mole's debut.

I didn't mean you would or should like either of those albums, and it bothers me naught if you dislike them, I just thought that the self-titled would score a little higher for you, or put another way Little Red Record would score even lower than it. When it comes to some music we are at opposite ends of the spectrum as I see it, but looking at it another way, I love Khan's Space Shanty and would give it a five. You gave it a five. I have expressed my love for Xanadu, not the Rush song, as have you. I have thought we are polar opposites in our tastes for some music, but also share a lot of the same likes. That said, I tend to look more for the commonalities than the differences with people and things. Like with politics, we share some things in common and not other big things. I do notice the differences of course, but maybe I am being too liberal, ![]() Edited by Logan - November 08 2022 at 07:09 |

^ Well, at least we share commonality in both loving Khan's Space Shanty album and I would give it a full 10 out of 10.
![]() Regarding the weird and disturbing stuff, I also like Comus, Dead Can Dance, Karda Estra & Paul Roland, so we share some commonalities there too.

Oh sure. It wasn't very thought through. 1974 has You and Rock Bottom, Postaeolian Train Robbery, Shamal and The Civil Surface... that's pretty soectacular. Also 1976 Viva Bomba + Picchio Da Pozzo and then there's National Health...

My fanboyism isn't only limited to Mostly Autumn. I've also gone overboard with 5-star ratings for Camel, Magenta & Renaissance too. ![]() I tried listening to four albums by Swans, but they're just not my cup of tea, and I'd guess I probably wouldn't like Art Zoyd either. I much prefer listening to Swan Lake anytime.. ![]() |
