Just means he's a character actor. There have been plenty of those in the history of cinema including John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and Jimmy Stewart as well to name but 3. Must be something to do with Westerns?

Ben Afflek is a much better director imo, his brother Casey ( who he has directed a few times) is a much better actor.

Not really familiar with too many Seth Rogen films but generally I think he is better off behind the camera (like Afflek) and is a decent writer.

I'd say that Michael Caine is an actor also with a habit of just playing himself, regardless of what he's in.

^ He gets a pass just for ''You Were Only Meant to Blow the Bloody Doors Off!'' LOL

There are a lot of actors like Caine who just have such a wonderful voice that alone is enough to carry them through their career. Classic case is the so called 'Voice Of God' actor James Earl Jones who voiced Darth Vader. Apparently a very distinguished actor but hard to remember too many roles he did. The only other one that springs to mind is Field Of Dreams.

I do like Michael Caine, but he always seems to play the same character, i.e. being Michael Caine.

I guess he gets hired to do just that, no difference to John Wayne and a multitude of actors out there. It might only be a small proportion at the end of the day that get to show a range but even then has Tom Hanks ever played a 'bad guy'? Basically his parts are nearly all reliable nice types. Caine however did produce an excellent performance in Zulu as a posh army officer before he settled into his east end gangster type roles.

Caine started in the gangster role types playing Harry Palmer in his early days. The Ipcress File, Funeral in Berlin and Billion dollar Brain.

He did try "acting" with Lawrence Olivier, on one film, but he got blown out!

Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler passed their sell-by dates long ago. I see their mugs, I switch channels (or services/platforms).

I also think John Wayne is overrated.

If it weren't for Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan, (and, I guess, Cast Away), Tom Hanks would probably be hanging out with Jim Carrey a lot more. But, yes, he always plays a chummy relatable guy and he can't really break out of that mold, unlike Michael Keaton, who has far more range.*

Some guys really did their best work in their early comedies. Bachelor Party is an '80s classic and Tom was perfect for that.

*Ron Howard's Night Shift, which was Michael Keaton's debut, remains one of the savviest comedies ever. I love it. It's also Henry Winkler's best outing. But Keaton has since proven himself adept at playing a boozer, a villain, an antihero, a straight arrow, you name it. From Pacific Heights to Birdman, he's done a lot of great work.

For Tom Hanks I quite liked Money Pit with Shelley Long and a very strange cameo from legendary guitarist Leslie West.Less sure about Batchelor Party, don't have any great recollection.

Never liked Keaton's Batman whihc ruined it totally for me so I became somewhat prejudiced to everything he did after that. Beetlejuice also just annoyed me , not a fan!

I'm not a fan of Beetlejuice, either. But every great actor has at least a few throwaways. Check out Birdman.

Hi,

Keaton is a very interesting actor ... I'm pretty sure in Beetlejuice that he was able to run a muck, and the director could barely keep up with him. But he has done other far out bits here and there ... check out Much Doggy Do About Nothing where he plays Dogberry and the whole thing is the greatest compliment to Monty Python you will ever see .... even the scenes in "Delicatessen" taken directly from Monty Python as a satire are not half as good! But you will REMEMBER, this Dogberry thing. Fantastic ... and I'm not sure that every director is that crazy or that good, he probably did it to annoy Branagh and he must have gone ... wow ... that was neat!

I didn't see Batman, and kinda refuse to see all these Hollywood cartoon movies. But in many ways, Michael Keaton is, still, a better stage actor than he is a film actor.

Is Johnny Knoxville an actor?
I should have been a pair of ragged claws
Scuttling across the floors of uncertain seas
