Some of these are dumb, unoriginal, silly or boring but I wouldn't say most are "ugly." I actually like the Far Out cover with the glove. Pretty good album too.

Of course these things are subjective. I just think the album cover for Far Out is totally out of sync with the wonderful contents inside. Should be a tie dye background at least!

BTW ugly is a subject term as well but basically means: (#2 covers anything that we don't find appealing)

1. of unpleasant or unsightly appearance
2. repulsive, objectionable, or displeasing in any way
3. ominous or menacing: an ugly situation.
4. bad-tempered, angry, or sullen

^ Yes and I don't think that applies to a white glove otherwise Michael Jackson would be accused of being ugly (well, he kind of was anyway but not because of his glove. Lol.). Anyway, like you say it's subjective.

Thus, terrible kitsch or entirely lacking inspiration or skill to paint an illustration for the sleeve design of otherwise great records also matches the thread premise.

People will disagree on a lot of these covers posted here. In some cases they will agree. 
It is still all subjective.
