let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

Hi,
A few, funny and not so funny, notes! Zappa Plays Zappa -- Got blown out of the building in Eugene, OR, by Return to Forever. On that night, ZPZ ended up looking like a bunch of high school players that were not conducted by a certain Zappa. I have not been able to watch anything of his since. Not to mention that Dweezil disrespected a well known violin player ... inexcusable! Porcupine Tree -- In 1999, they lost their Prophet 5 to a spill, and they still managed to get on stage and play. A roadie was upset and said the band sounded awful ... and Sean Ahearn and I finally told that idiot to get out of the building ... the band sounded excellent, and it was the first time I had ever seen, or heard of them! I would love to hear a bootleg of that show, but Mr. Control made sure that even pictures could not be taken (I didn't as requested!), which made Sean Ahearn upset. I did see SW once in Portland, but in general, my respect went downhill, though I got the albums. Rick Wakeman -- After he left the great show, he went on a tirade about how bad TFTO was and duh and duh and duh ... and it was obvious that he was tooting his own horn to make sure his solo albums sold. They did, but to think they are good is not a good idea. Really cheap music, and composition in my book. The only thing that was interesting for me, was his special on Vivaldi. Even his take with RB was nice, but he was too full of himself ... and not exactly great. He could tell some jokes ... wow ... what a talent that is! Please .... !!! YES - TFTO at the Long Beach Arena ... I cried when I came out of the show, as I walked out during the 2nd ovation in the end, when they played Roundabout. It's almost the audience only wanted the monster hit and didn't give a damn about anything else. I knew right then, that the "real music" was gonna die, since the fans didn't care for anything except the hit. Fudge the rest! Haven't bothered with YES since, and got the album Relayer, and honestly? I don't care for it much and the music is sad, and a far sight of what it was, and I thought that the guitar going crazy was not necessary, but it felt like it was a finger to some audience folks, knowing that SH was one of the main drives behind TFTO with Jon and Chris. Not to say that there were no other great contributions! When I saw one of their shows on a Casino here in Oregon a few months before Chris passed away, it was the saddest thing I have ever seen ... left over wannabe Haight/Ashbury colors and dresses and hair and outfits ... and the worst singer I have ever heard in my life ... I won't even bother with his own band! The women dressed up like that was distastegul and ugly ... maybe if it was the days of the Carnival ... but a YES concert? Neil Young -- One of the folks that is a connection to a time that the media hated and trashed for years, and he has survived and is still playing ... however, no one knows or remembers anything from then, and he is as forgotten as he seems lost on stage, playing something or other that might have some meaning ... Ohio is long gone and forgotten, and those ashes are already disperesed in the wind ... but the angst and cynicism is still there and no one can stand up to it, because of the money the sales can make! We miss the ones that were important at a time that needed it ... these days? no one cares! Pink Floyd -- Pompeii. For me, this was valuable in the early days because it was in QUAD in its first iteration through the theaters. No fan, since DSOTM has ever heard or known what it was ... and how it helped make the band, and it led to making it all come alive with the DSOTM light and lazer show. The QUAD is something that folks are still hoping to catch and hear in their life. And most bands won't bother as it is a hassle to put together and a bigger mess to play these days, with so many options digitally ... which should make it easier. But why spend 1 million on a show when you can do it for 100K? Or less, if your name is RW! I did not like the DSOTM bits in the film ... it was not necessary, but the record company thought it would be a good idea to suggest the band had something new in the pipeline! Jaki Leibzeit Tribute -- For fans of the music, and specially CAN, this is a must, and you get to see what "krautrock" is really all about when Damo takes the stage. It's far out and totally electric. Sad that it had to be a tribute album, but it was very special in its own way with some outstanding folks playing, specially Micheal Rother! Tangerine Dream -- Too many shows to think one is better than the other. I saw them on their first and 2nd tours in America, and they were great specially "Live in America" album with the trees on fire in the back picture off The Greek Theater right under the Lazerium place on top of the mountain behind it! It tickles me greatly knowing I was there! My favorite shows, though are some with Linda Spa and Iris Camaa ... they added a lot more to the band thatn we care to check out and appreciate, and I think that only Edgar knew it, and TQ didn't give a damn, although it is possible that he thought they did not need anyone else and he could play it all by himself! Too much ego for me, and not enough musicianship distributed around. Hoshiko is nice, but really wasted just playing melody! Gong in the 90's. Got to see them from 1995 to 1999 with three different drummers. The first time it was Pip and the show was jazzy you could say. The 2nd time it was Pierre, and it was rock hard and deep. And the third had the drummer that had been in S2S ... and it was a bit mechanical and trippy ... but nice. The only sad part of it, was in 1999 when Daevid was doing his thing and there were some folks doing video and Daevid had started a bit and the camera left him half way to go somewhere else ... he was not happy and flicked her off with the fingers sideways and slightly hidden. It said it all about video and filming of any band in the last 50 years ... the folks don't even know the music to be able to make it better and more valuable. Saddest moment in rock music I have ever seen, when you realized that nothing of it was going to survive the I don't give a pooness of the Internet age! Nothing means anything at all! It's all just another song as Dean used to say! PDQ Bach -- The odd one out here, but he only used local players and thus the rehearsals were not way too much, and yet, you would never know it ... the show was hilarious and I had to get out for 10 minutes because I was laughing too hard and getting sick ... but PA doesn't know or give a cahoot about the Oratorio 1/2 TSpoon any way, let alone Beethoven's Football game on the 5th Quarter! And of course, the worst for PA ... lyrics like ... "have you got any onions?..." Walked out concerts: Deep Purple -- in a show at the Long Beach Arena that Leon Russell opened up and did great. The show was too loud and it sounded to me that DP was out of tune. 15 miuntes was enough ... gone! Rolling Stones -- too loud and the audience was ridiculous ... walked out after 20 minutes. There was nothing new in there! The Far Out Stuff: Yehudi Menuhin and Ravi Shankar in Chicago doing their East Meets West, that had a most memorable ending ... when leaving the theater some fat old witch was telling her friends with an attitude ... "how can all that improvisation be called music?" /// I'm sure you want her to be your momma or your music teacher! Better yet, Rick Wakeman's muse!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
