I added that part because I reserve the right to completely disagree and argue, broohaha, bicker, bicker, bicker, with every opionion posted :D

My current music goal is to acquire the Crimson Catalogue. The back catalogue of the Crimson King. Not including The Power to Believe, Construction of Light, Thrak, and Discipline (their best album IMO).

I'm familiar - to one degree or another - with the rest of their work. Not entirely convinced about Lizard or Islands, and I'm not sure about Wetton's lyrics.

But I must acquire them all. I used to own the three eighties albums which I always liked but for some reason no longer do.

So where do I start and why?

My 2 cents worth or country of choice worthless currency.

Whenever I discovered bands late in their career and wanted to know more, I always started at the beginning and worked my way forward through their progression.  Court of the Crimson King.

I was a mild to mid Crimson fan until I saw in concert that 8 man beast that the current band is back in 2017, now I am "slightly" obsessed with all of the recordings.

From the beginning and please keep track in a record, a journal of even this thread your thoughts on each album.
Not looking for the greatest reviews ever, I'm more interested to read how you were before, during and after listening to the album.
Don't rush through them! Space a day between the next KC.
I can assure you when you're finished you will look back on the posts and think "Well... That's why they called it King Crimson!"
Happy listening and good luck chronicling your adventures with King Crim!

If you are (not too serious) about any band, maybe you should listen to all their albums on the net, and then decide which ones you would want to have.

Simply owing all releases by any band just because you want a complete collection seems silly to me.

Well I don't do Spotify because it slows this Tablet down, if the albums are streamed there. Still give each albums a couple of days streams before posting.
The reaction never heard this song ever honest videos I could never do for King Crimson.
Again though, enjoy the journey with the listening, OP!

That's not it at all. As I said, I'm already familiar with their work, I just don't own it.

For me the first is a must, In The Court ....and of course.. Red.
After that it depends on your like of the first period or second period when Wetton joined.
I like all of them to some degree.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Is a fine idea but I've heard these albums before, I'm not completely new to crimson. I am less familiar with lizard and islands however

Lizard and Islands are slow burners in my view. Took me ages to get into them (same LTIA). Maybe you buy them first to give yourself most time with them? (Then I may be atypical, I mean I loved Beat from first listen and it hasn't waned a bit since.)

Court, all the Wetton records, and the '80s quartet albums are essential. That includes USA, Absent Lovers and the other live stuff.

You are embarking upon one of the great quests in recent musical history.

You will not be able to resist becoming quite serious about it at some point.

I wish you well and Godspeed!

lol
Perhaps finding the happy medium is harder than we know.

I think it best to park the live/side projects for now. Just stick to the core albums. Not least of all because that stuff is hard to find.

I used to really like Beat, but I'm a little cooler on it now. It has some great tracks (Sartori, Waiting Man, Neal and Jack and Me) but some weaker moments. Two Hands is kinda boring and the Howler I struggle with. It doesn't have the quirkiness of 3PP.

Still good though. But nothing compares to Discipline. Every track is good. No filler IMO

And if a pick between the two, while Islands does have a lot of beauty it's the quietest album for me. It's not an album of soft acoustic moments, but compared to Lizard GAH! Dammit! I'm going to have to buy Lizard again!

He didn't write those. That's Richard Palmer-James.

If you're going to buy all their albums. Why does it matter where you start? Place all album titles in a hat and draw one. Repeat the process until you are finished.

You should get three copies of the Rooooooooooooar of P4. One for the car, one for the living room and one for your grandmother. It's that good baby!

For me, In the Court of the Crimson King, Larks Tongues in Aspic, and Red (and the Power to Believe, which you discarded). I would consider some live ones too, though. After those studio albums, I would consider Collectable King Crimson Vol 1 (which includes the whole USA concert, without edits nor overdubs, and another concert, Mainz, that includes my very favourite version of Starless), Vroom Vroom (I mostly like the 80's songs better played by the double trio in the 90's), and one of the new live albums from the new line-up.
