Hi There,
I haven't been very active on this site, but I was listening to some prog albums over the last couple of days and I thought there must be some more out there that would appeal to me and I thought this would be a good place to get recommendations.

My favourite Prog bands are
Yes & Gentle Giant

But I also like Moon Safari ( I love vocal harmonies am a big fan of the Beach Boys), The Enid, Caravan, The Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North, National Health, Family, Gong, Flower Kings, Jethro Tull, Mike Oldfield, Genesis I have one PFM album (I probably should get more), Robert Wyatt. I have some ELP but I'm looking for stuff that is less bombastic than that.

I prefer things with a slightly romantic imaginative bent rather than harsh and furious.

I'd very much appreciate some recommendations and if you could give a short description of the band that's be great.  Many thanks in advance.

I think you might like the US symph prog band Glass Hammer. They have been around since the 90's and have probably released about 15-20 albums. Highlights are
Lex Rex
The Inconsolable Secret (my favourite and has been released as a deluxe version)
Three Cheers For The Broken Hearted (this is 'pop' but is rather nice imo)
If (probably their most well regarded generally and features Jon Davison , now the official Yes vocalist)

their more recent albums are okay but maybe go with the ones I suggest first if you can find them.

Having recommended many many times, but Finnish seventies prog is just great. Here´s something to start:

Hm, some of the artists you mentioned (Robert Wyatt, Soft Machine, Jethro Tull, even Gong, National Health or Hatfield and the North at times) can be pretty harsh or furious though. My personal stance on this matter is that there should preferably be a good balance of both, though there are some artists I like a lot that have clear leanings in one direction.

A band that in my opinion nails it when it comes to the alteration between harsh and furious and romantic imaginative are Van der Graaf Generator, for example their album "Godbluff". Here a link to the reissue with some live bonus tracks; the first four tracks (The Undercover Man, Scorched Earth, Arrow, Sleepwalkers) constitute the original album.

Many thanks for the replies

I have Glass Hammer If - I'll give it another spin see if it wins me over

Thanks for the suggestion of Wigwam Fairyport - I'd never heard of them I'll have a good listen, first impression is quite good. I don't have any Finnish prog, I l;ike the idea of music coming from the land of the Moomins

I have tried Van Der Graaf Generator in the past  I might give them another go, but from memory I found the vocal delivery/vision dark and cold.

Very much appreciate the suggestions.

Van der Graaf Generator cover the full range of emotions, of which dark and cold certainly is an aspect.

I suppose that would depend on the track. Does "romantic" include lost love? If so, perhaps "Lost" from Van der Graaf Generator's "H to He, Who am the Only One" would be suitable. Also, "The Quiet Zone / The Pleasure Dome" is quite different from previous Van der Graaf Generator albums, and includes tracks that might be considered "romantic".

Hey! Here are some albums that came into my mind :)

Harmonium - Les cinq saisons

King Crimson - In the court of the crimson king

Renaissance - Scheherazade and other stories

Camel - Snow goose

Give these albums a spin, most chaotic and harsh of the four is the "King Crimson" one. Enjoy!

Smile Moomins are great!

Here´s some other great albums from our land, they´re really close to Wigwam as style:
Tasavallan Presidentti: Lamberland
Haikara: s/t (this has King Crimson influences, I prefer more personal second album Geafar, first song in it is little bit odd funky piece, but rest of the album is just great)
Kalevala: People No Names
Nova: Atlantis (this has Floyd influences)
Scapa Flow: Uuteen Aikaan

Also Wigwam´s members Jukka Gustavson, Pekka Pohjola & Jim Pembroke have made great solos!

There are actually several meanings of the word "romantic". One of them is "of, relating to, or having the characteristics of romanticism". Romanticism was a literary, artistic, and philosophical movement in the 18th and 19th century. It put an emphasis on the imagination and emotions, an exaltation of the primitive and the common man, an appreciation of external nature, an interest in the remote and a predilection for melancholy. In that regard Van der Graaf Generator are one of the most romantic bands ever. The composer and writer Robert Schumann is a perfect example for a romantic artist.

Yes i did mean romantic in terms of Romanticism as in individualistic and imaginative, although I prefer the airy Shelley to the brooding Lord Byron and the height of romanticism for me is in the fantasy work of the Victorian writer George MacDonald. I agree Van der Graaf generator is romantic, I've just checked out a couple of things on youtube and I recognise their quality but they are not for me. I can like darkly romantic material so i think in this case it is just a matter personal taste.

You can find some of my all-time favourite long-lost album treasures on my Prog Britannia Album Reviews blog. Whenever available, I've also posted the full YouTube video album just above the review. Smile

If you like Yes and GG, you simply need to hear Wobbler. Check out their newest album From Silence To Somewhere

I have heard Yezda Urfa described as a combination of Yes and Gentle Giant so you might like them. As for other US prog maybe Cathedral(the one that did stained glass stories not the 90's neo band) and Happy the Man.

Wobbler is a great band you might enjoy.......but I would start with Rites At Dawn.

David Sancious,

Bruce Springsteen's original piano player.  Gave up the big bucks with 'E' Street to do his own thing. (He did go into the Hall of Fame with Springsteen as an original member)

Thank you to all who responded, this was definitely the right place to ask that question. I have now got some good suggestions

I have ordered Camel - Snow Goose, I do have Moon Madness and was listening to that and thinking I need to get something more of theirs.

and will definitely get a CD by Wobbler both albums suggested seem good, found them on youtube, will have to decide which one, if it grows on me I'll get the other.

I will check out other suggestions on youtube, I'm still open for other suggestions if anyone else has them, but that's great you were very helpful.
