Choosing the progressive metal bands for the poll was more difficult than the neo-prog bands. It was way harder than I thought. But for the fun of it and hopefully a bit of discussion, here are 25 bands, you choose your favorite and please leave a comment/post your choice.

I realize there are some omissions (obviously), but if you want to point them out, please bring an argument at least and I'll bow my head in shame Embarrassed and if the argument is great, then you'll get some Clap from me.

Many bands that I love among these. Yet my favourite is Symphony X. Met them in 2000, and since then I'm a gigantic fan of them. Cool list. Seeing Poverty's No Crime is good. They are not known to many who are not into prog metal that much. My favourite prog metal band is Symphony X, yes... but my favourite prog metal album is Beyond Twilight's last album entitled For the Love of Art and the Making. Approve

Tough call between Opeth and Pain Of Salvation. But opeth has greater consistency, so my vote goes to them.

I only know two Progressive Metal bands -  unless you count Christopher Lee & Rhapsody of Fire as a Prog Metal band - and my vote goes to Ayreon here, followed closely by Dream Theater.

There is no such thing as "Christopher Lee & Rhapsody of Fire". If I remember right Lee did some spoken word on a Rhapsody album. That's all.

I also do not consider any Rhapsody (there were 4 of them at some point LOL)  as progressive metal, but that's a different story.

There's also this. Great song, great collaboration. Prog? I guess not. Tongue

That's okay. I'll save my vote for Christopher Lee & Rhapsody of Fire for the next time there's a full moon. Wacko

If the first one is prog (non-metal), and the latter is metal (non-prog); then the fusion of both is prog metal. :O)))

Very fun, but not prog metal. There's no Rhapsody of Fire here too. Party

epic heavy/Euro-power at best, nothing progressive though.

Oh well. C'est La Vie. It looks like I'm not progressing very well with my wish to see Christopher Lee included in the Progressive Metal category. Cry

If anyone ever suggests Christopher Lee's band, it will be the easiest "no". And I respect Lee for collaborating with metal musicians and creating music.

I'll give a vote to the excellent Vanden Plas. Dream Theater and Ayreon are favorites as well.

You can't get more 'metal' than a trombone with the first and the second one are undoubtedly innovators so by any definition they are 'progressive'
