023 has been another fine year for music (and 2022 was superb). I plan to do at least one more Prog one for 2023 and one with acts that is for General Music Discussions. So if you see what you think is an obvious missing, like, for instance, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's PetroDragonic Apocalypse, that will be in the next one.
Please vote for one, but list any of these that you feel like in your post. Maybe consider discussing "others" after the second poll goes up as those might be there anyway. And feel free to vote with limited familiarity. This is not a contest. ---------------------------------- Agusa - Prima Materia ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT - Darling the Dawn Baroness - Stone The Chronicles of Father Robin - The Songs & Tales of Airoea: Book 1 Deposed King - One Man's Grief District 97 - Stay for the Ending Lars Fredrik Frøislie - Fire Fortellinger Peter Gabriel - i/o Haken - Fuana The Holy Family - Go Zero Homunculus Res - Ecco l'impero dei doppi sensi Jack O' The Clock - The Warm, Dark Circus Jordsjø - Salighet Moon Safari - Himlabacken Vol. 2 Oiapok - OisoLün OK Goodnight - The Fox and the Bird PoiL - Poil Ueda Riverside - ID.Entity Seven Impale - Summit Squid - O Monolith Swans - The Beggar La Theorie des Cordes - 4u-9525 Ultraphauna - No No No No Steven Wilson - The Harmony Codex Zopp - Dominion ---------------------------------- If I were to choose just five, then I would go with: Swans - The Beggar Squid - O Monolith PoiL - Poil Ueda ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT - Darling the Dawn Oiapok - OisoLün For just one of those, I will go with Swans' The Beggar. ^ Glad to see someone comment, thanks. I hope that many people here are taking an interest in contemporary music, and it's important to support the current music scene if we care about contemporary music getting made.

Second vote for Swans. Intense and gripping. It would a fitting final album if Gira so chooses.
I just bought my ticket to see them in Richmond next year. I was surprised to see them playing through here since many artists don't. They will be at a relatively smaller venue with max capacity of 500. 2023 was a good year. I heard about 20 of the 25 albums listed and a good number of those would make my year-end top 40. Other favorites from the list: Jack O' the Clock - The Warm, Dark Circus Ultraphauna - No No No No PoiL/Ueda La Theorie des Cordes - 4u-9525 ALL HANDS_MAKE LIGHT - "Darling the Dawn" Squid - O Monolith Edited by mathman0806 - December 30 2023 at 17:15 |

^ I would love to see Swans. And that may be the last chance. Looks like the closest concert to me for this coming tour is San Francisco in May -- it's not close to Vancouver, BC, but the timing May work...

A number of my favourite albums for the year are in the list but Zopp has steadfastly remained NO1 in my list all year.
However I heard Built For The Future - Heretic: 2084 for the first time yesterday and it blew me away. A 'grungy' prog album with tremendous playing and atmosphere and a strong sci-fi theme. Right up my alley! Need to give this some serious listening.

Haven't listened to all of these yet, but Agusa is my favorite of those I have. My front ear hears things that my left, right, and rear ears don't pick up.

A number of really good albums also here; several will appear in my top 20. The Holy Family is my pick.

I still haven't managed to listen to The Chronicles of Father Robin. So many releases in 2023, I still have around 15 albums to check out.
