Todd Rundgren and John Wetton have had their lows and highs - and the highs are amongst my favourites (e.g. Hiroshima, Real Man for the former, Waterloo 6.02 for the latter). Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Warren Zevon, Pete Townshend.

If we're talking strictly SONG writers, i.e. crafters of SONGS as opposed to music and compositions in general then here's a few of my favourites:
- Shulman, Shulman & Minnear
- Robert Wyatt
- Don Van Vliet (a.k.a. Captain Beefheart)
- Peter Hamill
- Bob Drake
- Vivian Stanshall
I could probably think of a lot more but this is just off the top o' me head.
