Ok, I'm tired of all the neglect the modern prog bands are getting in these rescent "top ten" threads!

So come on, give some credit where credit is due!

Dream theater (not a big fan of them, but are massively important to the rebirth of symphonic prog)
Porcupine tree
Marillion
Tool (the only prog band to have more than one radio hit since the seventies, c'mon!)
Opeth (for going where no other prog bands has gone before!)

I only got five, but more will come!

Dream Theater - Saved the Genre

Pain of Savlation - brought something new to the dying prog-metal scene

Porcupine Tree - Psychedelic band, later in career adding hard rock elements..growing fanbase.

Opeth - Extending the boundries

The Mars Volta - The newest-successful prog-band bringing more new influences.

and,,...,,.

bedtime.

I really don't see how Dream Theater are important to the history of symphonic prog.  It's the Neo boys that kept sympho alive.

Dream Theater massively boosted the popularity of prog metal, but had little to do with sympho.

Actually, Marillion had multiple radio hits in the eighties if I'm not mistaken.  And Marillion are not a modern band; their debut was 1983.

well, I guess I am considering modern bands as any band created after 1980

I dont know about you, but here in America, Marillion did not make any hits that I know of.

Well, they aren't on the radio anymore.  Then again, neither will Tool in 25 years.  Several cuts on Script were on the radio "back in the day."

I'm not into the "popular" modern prog bands (mostly prog metal and neo); almost all of the modern bands I listen to are RIO.  None of them, frankly, would rank as "important" to today's scene, so it wouldn't be appropriate to list them.  I will leave the ranking to those who know the popular stuff better, and have their facts straight.

I've never been into metal.  I tried Bungle and Sleepytime, and I just didn't like them much.  Too metal for me, I guess.

So here's nine of the most important Zeuhl or Zeuhlish bands from Japan.

Ruins
Koenji Hyakkei (my personal fave at this time)
Bondage Fruit
Happy Family
Lacrymosa
Pochakaite Malko
Daimonji
Amygdala
Mongol
"Questions are a burden to others; answers a prison for oneself" (The Prisoner, 1967).

Most important today:

Dream Theater
Porcupine Tree
Opeth
Tool
Mars Volta
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum (though it's odd for me to say that, and it may not be true)
Pain of Salvation

others?

Though I love Neo, I don't really see it being that important, per se. For the movement, that is.

Though it might be controversial, I'll suggest at the moment Porcupine Tree are the most important prog band. They're garnering incredible attention from press like Classic Rock mag and are getting a tremendously high number of good reviews on this site.

I was SO close to putting SGM, but I don't think they're big enough nor have enough influence to be called that important

though they'd probably make it to the "Top Ten Best Newer Prog Groups" list.
I should totally start that thread.

well, if  "modern" means "anything since 1980" then for me the Ozric Tentacles come first. I would also name Inner City Unit, a band that is not in the archives and perhaps never will be; by my standard they are fully prog though and founders of the "prog punk" genre. check out their homepage here:

For me the most important modern progrock bands are bands with an innovative and eclectic approach like:

Nemo, Kotobel, Senogul, William Gray and Lost World Clap

1. GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR
2. OCEANSIZE
3. TOOL
4. MONO
5. THE AMBER LIGHT
6. PORCUPINE TREE
7. DREDG
8. THE MARS VOLTA
9. PINEAPPLE THIEF
10. GREGOR SAMSA

If you mean any Prog since 80s or 90, it's just CONTEMPORARY prog

Dream Theater: i agree, they are the most influential one and really great in mucisianship, also they've released most important masterpiece of this decade (Systematic Chaos)

Porcupine Tree: without doubt same league with Dream Theater, they maybe get even one step forward in the emotion and flow of music

Marillion: a masterpiece album in the 80s, 90s and Millenium - what more need to be said? Still my very favourite band in creating emotion that can make you cry

Opeth: Ghost Reveries album alone deserves them a permanent place in prog music ALL TIME top 10 records, simply amazing and very emotional

Rush: with Snakes & Arrows album they've re-created and re-invented their sound and they were always in the frontline developing prog forward

I am sorry to say but bands like Tool or Radiohead just don't do it for me, they are too much mainstream and Tool is nothing but grunge metal in my ears. Most amazing two new bands for me are Opeth and Porcupine Tree. Clap

Echolyn should be added to that list who I only discovered this year. How did I miss out on such a great band for so long!
