Topic: Eloy - masterpieces Posted: January 11 2008 at 08:39 |
Hi guys,
I just thought I would ask a question concerning Eloy. What are your favorite albums and why.
Mine are
Colours
Planets
Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes.
All three are classics in my mind, but very different. Planets is very space rock, and flows beautifully between tracks. Colours is much rockier, whilst Slient Cries is more Pink Floydesque. Truly, three remarkable albums. You will notice that I haven't included Ocean, I just can't get into it.

The best one is DAWN, in my opinion. Wonderful balance between acoustic and electric guitar, bass, mellotron, organ and strings. The cover art is just superb as the music.
A step below stands the excellent SILENT CRIES AND MIGHTY ECHOES with the best Eloy's track ever: The Apocalypse...wonderful epic sad atmosphere with interesting addition of femal (angelic let's say) choruses.
At third position an ex aequo:
the immortal (and "motionless"... just read my review...) OCEAN and the unespected TIME TO TURN, their last great record with fabulous opener Through a Somber Galaxy, mini-epic track as End of an Odissey and good acoustic guitar in the warm closer Say is it really true.
Then, the other classics from their repertoire:
POWER AND THE PASSION, COLOURS, PLANETS (with the exciting Queen of the Night).
Not my fave:
FLOATING and PERFORMANCE.

Thank you Andrea for your reply. It seems we are the only Eloy fans in the Prog Universe. Nevermind we will keep our well guarded secret to ourselves.
Perhaps I would have got more feedback if the question had been on Dream Theater or Porcupine Tree.

My favourite is Eloy Live, it was the first Eloy album I heard. It has a great atmosphere and excellent versions of some of my favourite Eloy tracks.

Indeed!
BTW, here on PA I know many Eloy's fans. In the past we have discussed a lot about this great german band.
Surprisingly, none of them posted here. Probably they didn't see this thread.
Just this morning I've put Colours on my car cd player and realized that, probably, my review and rate casted on PA are a little bit lower than its true quality.
Songs as Illuminations, Impressions and Child Migration are just superb!

Often overlooked, but indeed an amazing band.
I enjoy most Eloy albums with Dawn, Ocean and Power And The Passion as my favourites. but Colours and their debut are good too.
Think I'll put on Colours today, haven't heard it in years now, but that's the good thing about threads like these, the "Oh Yeah I forgot about that album" factor.

I confirm that Colours is a great album. Definitely a classic from them. As a transitional album it may appear non Eloysh at the first listen 'cause the previous and the following records goes to completely different directions...but I like the acoustic guitar phrasing in Child Migration and flute on Impressions.

The only Eloy albums I have are Colours & Planets. But I guess I would have to put Colours at the top. Really enjoy both though.

I only really like their second album _Inside_.

(After having listened to: Inside, Floating, Dawn, Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes, Ocean & Colours)
I'd say Dawn. It has the perfect balance between Space- and Symphonic Rock. The whole album can be seen as one, two, or three epics.
I love all the others aswell, but i think that Inside and Floating is special, because of the unpolished feel.
Those were more Psychedelic/Space, and not as much, if any Symphonic.

Depending on your tastes, anything up to 1982's TIme to Turn could be a
favourite. My favourites are Inside, Dawn, Colours, Planets and Time to
Turn. The latter 3 showed that a prog band could stay prog in the
80s while still changing their style.

Interesting topic here, Eloy certainly has many excellent and
distinctly different albums to chose from. Silent Cries, Planets,
Colors, and Dawn are all very solid with their own moments of
brilliance.
It's hard for me to pick just one, but one of my favorites that hasn't been mentioned is definitely Performance - this was a real step toward more techincal playing, take Shadow and Light for instance. Plus it had a great cover art!
Also have a soft spot for Floating - it was my first Eloy album many years ago. It's definitely early Eloy and less polished, but really set the tone for their signature sound with jams like The Light From Deep Darkness.
(not sure why you don't dig them Andrea but they are really some of Eloy's best IMHO :)
Definitely love me some Eloy! only wish I was old enough to have seen them in their heyday

In primis happy birthday Factorplayer.
Then, about the Floating matter I have to say that it's superior to Perfomance. Anyway, in comparison with the other classics it appears to me too immature. Not that I don't like to listening to it (I use to enjoy every Eloy's record I have) rather that it's less "spacey" and more "trippy" (psych) if you understand what I think. On the other hand it features a lot of great music. But if you ask me, I will always prefer the follow up, the mighty Power and the Passion.

By far Eloy Live is the best of their albums...Jurgen Rosenthal's performance is outstanding...the bass
playing of Klaus Peter Matzoil is often overlooked as well as the entire band. ELOY was one of the greatest prog bands ever.... I first heard this album in 1981..and every time I listen to it , even now it blows my mind..The Sun Song is a powerfull reminder of their talent. As well as Poseiden's Creation and Atlantis.
Unfortunately because they were from Germany, they never got the recognition they deserved....but I
am convinced they were as good as any of the the British prog bands of that era....
