 Topic: The Big Three

The three major prog bands of the seventies were , IMO, Genesis, Yes and ELP. Now the point is that I like all three of these bands, no not just like, they were a major part of me.
On this forum though, theres a lot of "Genesis were great ELP were crap" etc. I was just wondering if any of you chaps liked these three equally (more or less)

Of the three, I love Yes the most, followed by genesis and then ELP.

I would have to say Genesis is the best out of those three. I'm not saying that the others are bad (i really like yes and ELP) it's just that i think Genesis was better.

For me ELP was my first love, Genesis slowly edged in as time went by. Finally Yes joined the ranks and became a firm favourite over a longer period of time.

I originally preferred Genesis and ELP,to Yes.
Now Yes are easily my favourite,followed by Genesis.I dont really care for ELP anymore-I feel I have outgrown them.
My favourite 3 bands in 1977 are the same as 2005:
1. Rush
2. Yes
3. Genesis

Yes = good (although sometimes a little too cheesy), but not one of my favourites
Genesis = alright, but not one of my favourites (but I have only heard Nuresery Cryme and Foxtrot, so maybe my opinion will change)
ELP = a lot of showing off and far too sheesy, with some good bits. Not one of my favourites either

Don't forget King Crimson!
I like them more or less equally, but I feel that ELP's synth-heavy sound has not aged quite as well as the other two.
I'd probably pick classic Genesis over Yes, and Yes over ELP, but not by much....
They're all great, important early prog acts.

I thought that at one stage in the 1970s, you weren't allowed to like both ELP and Yes. Similar to the 60s when fans of the Beatles couldn't like the Stones and vice-versa.
When punk rock erupted, the detractors of these bands used to call them Yelpesis!

I would say I LOOOOVE Yes, Genesis to a slightly lesser extent, and ELP to a moderately lesser extent (the only ALBUM I enjoy by ELP is BSS, though I enjoy a lot of other selected pieces). Heck, Close To The Edge, Selling England By The Pound, and Brain Salad Surgery are all definitely in my top 10 classics of the genre, with CTTE & SEBTP quite possible 1 and 2; that is, if we don't count Rush  .

these, along with King Crimson are among the greatest prog bands in the
history of this genre, they are all excellent but out of the three I
definetly love GENESIS the most... their music has changed me, I
LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ELP have always been my favourite band and I expect will remain so.I only got into Yes and Genesis belatedly as I wasn't a great prog fan to start with.ELP were a more agressive band with a more rock n roll attitude and lifestyle whic appealed to me and still does.Prog should be fun.By comparison I consider Yes and Genesis to be very tame although nowadays I appreciate them a lot more as I get older.

ELP are good but i would call them second tier prog giants. Perhaps Yes, Genesis and Krimson are the top ones, but then jethro tull and Pink Floyd also deserve a special mention!
