Topic: Is Blur considered prog? Posted: January 01 2012 at 19:05 |
I mean, their work after 'The Great Escape' (which, in a way, is a concept album about people with depressing lives). I've listened to their album, '13', and it seems like they have some prog influences. Anyone care to share their thoughts?

About as prog as Radiohead, but they're not on the site so this thread is in the wrong forum.

Not nearly as prog as Radiohead, or prog at all. Good alternative/britpop band.

No. But they do have some very interesting experimental aspects in their later output; not what we could call progressive, but still of interest to proggers, I'd say.

What drove me to ask this question was, in particular, the song(s) "Caramel", "Optigan 1", and most of The Great Escape.

I do enjoy the band but they aren't prog. They do have some progressive qualities. PARKLIFE is not one of them.

I love Blur myself, but I've never considered them prog. Experimental, certainly. Creative, definitely.
"13" is my favorite album of theirs, and probably the one most of interest to progressive rock fans.
I might even suggest that they are inspired by progressive rock, so they do carry some prog rock elements into albums like 13 and Great Escape, as has been mentioned.

Blur has to be my third favorite band, only to be topped by Yes and Rush.

So... what do you think of "Think Tank"? It's kinda growing on me. And how about Graham Coxon's solo stuff? I have "Happiness in Magazines" and it's on a par with Blur's best stuff, I think.

"Think Tank" for me is a decent album. IMO it has about four tracks actually worth listening all through (Battery In Your Leg is Damon's best singing ).

Yeah, but they're still better than most generic prog-metal today.

Well yeah, but that's not the point I was trying to make. I like Blur too.
My point is a band can have progressive qualities and not have anything to do with prog rock. What they do is different but it doesn't move them from britpop genre. They were one of the most experimental britpop groups, that's for sure.

No, I knew they weren't prog rock from what you were saying, I was just saying that their music, in general was better than generic prog-metal. I wasn't aiming that statement at what you said.

Wait, what does metal have to do with it?!
Feels like comparing apples and oranges to me.
