 Topic: Your Favorite Prog: Older, Newer, Doesn't Matter?

What is your preference, if any, for your Favorite Prog?
Older Prog (1966 to 1990)?
Newer Prog (1991 to the present)?
Who Cares As Long As It's Good Prog?
Personally, I prefer Older Prog. I was mid-teens when In the Court of the Crimson King came out, so, I've grown up with that album and am amazed at its lasting power over the years. Each new generation seems to find something of value in its music.
Likewise Close to the Edge.
Of the Newer Prog Porcupine Tree, Pure Reason Revolution (RIP), Taal (RIP), Big Big Train and iamthemorning are a few groups I really enjoy.

All of it, I buy as much new stuff as I do old stuff. I've got loads of holes in my discographies for older bands and I'm loving finding stuff, I also really enjoy a lot of the more modern bands.

It doesn't really matter to me. There was some great prog back in the 70s (and 80s) and there is some good prog now. I like them equally.

Pre 1991 prog makes up about 80% of my collection...though I've got nothing against post 1991...I'm happy to find good prog whenever it was made

If it's got heart I'll listen to it. Doesn't matter when or where it was made - it just needs to have a little zing in it - preferably a lot

Well, yes. Absolutely.
I guess what I'm trying to see is if there is a disconnect between those of us who are older, like me, with newer prog, or not. Which, y'know, is not going to be revealed as I didn't ask folks to state their age (this thread was doomed from the beginning!  )
I do find it harder to find an emotional commonality, enjoyment and appreciation of groups like The Mars Volta, the last few Porcupine Tree albums, Steven Wilson's solo albums, Tool, Dream Theater, The Flower Kings and Devin Townsend, amongst others.

Well, I like classic and modern prog pretty equally. If you made me choose I'd say the holy trinity of King Crimson, Genesis, and VDGG makes the 70's virtually unbeatable for me. I may listen to modern music more often, but that classic stuff will always bring me to a special place. I'm 22 by the way.
EDIT: I think most of my favorite modern stuff is either crossover or avant. I don't really care for stuff that follows too closely in the 70's footsteps or sticks to a prog formula.

Thanks for your participation. I'm in my mid-fifties and, truthfully, my musical tastes these days runs to the more electronic, melodic, crossover and avant types.

Based on what's out there to buy and listen to the Old Prog wins it for me....but I would not want to give up many of the newer bands that have come on the scene from the 80's on.

I'm going to say older prog although I love some modern prog bands such as Anathema and Glass Hammer. There is good stuff across all the decades of prog.

I like prog with electricity most of the time, but then I also like the acoustic side of Tull, and Jan Akkerman, Mellow Candle (and I've got plenty of piano jazz.
I should just say I like prog with instruments.

I don't have a preference either way, but my library gets more plays from the older music than the newer stuff.
