I was very young back then but I remember prog being really popular in my native Spain, along with the rock of the times (Zeppelin, D Purple, The Who, Lou Reed, Bowie, Sabbath etc). Nearly every home I remember going to would have a copy of DSOTM, Tubullar Bells, Tarkus, SEBTP...
 
As Ivan pointed out, a crucial difference was that back then music formed a really prominent part of the youth culture, it united people much more than now, among other things because youth had not many other entertainments and little money. In the post-hippie environment rock music was a very strong driving cultural force.
