Well, I had been listening to Gentle Giant's The Missing Piece for years before I even knew what prog was, or that it existed; I just liked the album. But the first prog album I listened to after becoming aware of prog's existence was Yes's Fragile; after I overheard my dad listening to something from 90125 and I asked about it, he encouraged me to check out the rest of his Yes albums.

Prior to this I'd bought some samplers including "Gutbucket" which had a great track on it by Hapshash And the Coloured Coat called "The Wall", and the Age of Atlantic which had a couple of early Yes tracks (Survival and ??) as well as "Whole Lotta Love" and a great track called "Broken Arrow" by Buffalo Springfield- probably the most proggy thing Neil Young has done.

Wow. You were certainly there at the beginning.
The first single i ever bought was in 1972, aged 9, Argent's Hold Your Head Up. Not prog by any stretch but by an artist with slightly proggish leanings...

This story is kind of funny but i remember hearing about Genesis from when Phil Collins mentioned them briefly in the South Park episode "Timmy 2000". I thought wow, I didn't know he was in another band, so I looked back at their discography, and the first thing I saw was more pop work such as Invisible Touch and Abacab. It was then i discovered their earlier work, realizing it was much different than the pop work and I became very intrigued. The first time I listened to the mellotron introduction to "Watcher of the Skies", I was floored. The entire album Foxtrot really turned me on to progressive rock, even though I may have heard Pink Floyd and Yes' prog work a little earlier, but it was the work of Genesis that permanently solidified my love for the genre, as they remain my favorite band of prog to this day. Thank you South Park! Heart
