Episode 65 - Coruscating Compilations! "Spaced Out - The Story of Mushroom Records" (Feat. Simon Finn, Second Hand, Chillum, Magic Carpet, Lol Coxhill and more) - Full CD Review!

Watch here:

https://youtu.be/MVCYlvDRniU

In this episode I check out "Spaced Out - The Story of Mushroom Records", a double disc compilation issued by the ever-dependable Grapefruit Records back in 2017.

Vic Keary's Mushroom label only operated for a short time in the early '70s, but nevertheless it still managed to put out an eclectic blend of stuff, most notably Simon Finn's staggering masterpiece of dark, deranged acid folk "Pass the Distance", Magic Carpet's self-titled set of gorgeously glowing acoustic raga psych and Second Hand's eccentric prog masterpiece "Death May Be Your Santa Claus", all of which are represented here, alongside all manner of rootsy traditional tunes, Indian classical music and even a smattering of avant-jazz from legendary sax blower Lol Coxhill!

Keary was more than just a label boss, though, working his studio magic on literally hundreds of recordings from the 1960s onwards, a generous helping of which are also included here, among them tracks by pop psych legends Tuesday's Children and Felius Andromeda, not to mention an excellent solo single from FA's organ player and Northern England's answer to Syd Barrett, the tragic Denis Couldry.

Cheers!

Episode 66 - Prog & Psych Picks! After All / Between / J. D. Blackfoot / Brain Police - Album Reviews!

Watch here:

https://youtu.be/yhGntZRzvl4

In this video I share my thoughts on *and* show pretty pictures of a quartet of stellar discs- the impressively high quality self-titled effort by short-lived prog/psych/jazz rockers After All, the last in the original run of classics by world/fusion/new age pioneers Between, the debut offering from J. D. Blackfoot, which is a 50/50 split between pleasant, rural West Coast-isms and screaming rock opera drama and finally, a CD featuring the complete works of San Diego's Brain Police, whose lone LP took in everything from fragrant baroque pop, scorching R&B and sludgy proto metal!

Music discussed and shown...

After All s/t (Gear Fab Records)
Between "Silence Beyond Time" (Intuition Records)
J. D. Blackfoot "The Ultimate Prophecy" (Tokala)
Brain Police "San Diego's Only Psychedelic Cops" (Shadoks Music)

Cheers!
