Actually thats not true either. The real story is that Emerson and the Nice did tour with Hendrix & the Experience... and when the Emerson and Lake got together they asked Mitch Mitchell if he would like to join them, but he showed up with an armed body guard.. and they thought that was a little too much. They joked about asking Jimi, but it was never a serious situation... Keith Emerson got rid of Davy O'List from the Nice cause he wouldn't share the limelight with an over eager guitarist... what makes you think he'd go anywhere's near Hendrix..
And on the timing... ELP played their second gig at the Isle of Wight in Aug. of 70... Jimi Hendrix played the same event. Altho Jimi did die the next month after that .. at the end of Sept, 1970.

I agree Lunar. The interview with Keith was that explicit also. It was Mitch Mitchell courting Keith and Greg with Jimi to be in the mix. Keith said I don't usually like playing with guitar players but I would have given it a go with Hendrix. (I would never forget that quote) My friends and I talked about that whole scenario for a week wondering what it might have sounded like.
This magazine, Contemporary Keyboard, this article was in, Keith was on the advisory committee (as was Rick Wakeman and Chic Corea) so I don't think they would have misquoted him on the subject.
It makes me wonder what the truth is now.

Maybe this will help. I found this at ELP's offical site in the bio section:
It was Mitchell, whom Lake and Emerson believed had the most potential, and though Emerson wanted to keep the project a keyboard-bass-drums trio, there was serious talks to add Jimi Hendrix to the line up.
"Yeah, that story is indeed true, to some degree." says Lake. "Mitch Mitchell had told Jimi about us and he said he wanted to explore the idea. Even after Mitch was long out of the picture and we had already settled on Carl, talk about working with Jimi continued. We were supposed to get together and jam with him around August or September of 1970, but he died before we could put it together."
The rumors of the potential band with Hendrix did leak out to the British music press, who began running articles saying the band would be called "Hendrix, Emerson, Lake & Palmer" or HELP, for short.

There are 3 different versions of this story told by Greg over the years.. and a few others in magazines by Keith and Carl. However, read Keith's book... it will give you the story I just gave you above... and I heard it from Greg, Mitch Mitchell and the Experience's road manager.. Eric Barrett many years ago. I've heard Keith say directly that it was never a serious consideration but they would of liked to have jammed with him.

My dream band is an all-girl goth-metal group performing in my pants.
No, I didn't just say that...did I?
It's kinda funny though, don't you think?

Just makes you think that they kind of want the legend of this story to continue. It is a pretty cool rumor/legend.

Hendrix appeared to be heading for a very busy few months if he
stayed alive and these stories are right - because also Miles
Davis and Hendrix were supposed to be getting together very soon after
the Isle Of Wight Festival to discussing playing music.
[Coincidently Miles Davis's set at IoWF with an all star line-up,
is supposed be released on DVD this month[.
Talking Hendrix, the guys at the Fusenet jazz rock discussion group
have recently been talking about the strong infleunce of Hendrix on
Jean Paul Bourelly, enough to encourage me to increase the JPB albums
owned from one to three. Certainly something of the "future of
Hendrix" there in Bourelly's playing and vocals.

I guess I'm lucky. I dreamt of a dream band around 1974 of Billy Cobham, John McLaughlin and Jack Bruce - they had played as duos in bands but never as three members together , but then in 1978/9 it came about. Added David Sancious to line-up and they toured Europe; I saw them at the Rainbow in London. Both seeing and hearing McLaughlin playing Sunshine of your love as blues jazz, was amazing. But why didn't they record?
And for one of the dreambands that actually came together, and on the basis of the album (and now the DVD), I wish I had been there, Joni Mitchell's Shadows & Light tour with Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker, Lyle Mays, Don Alias and the Persuasions (and have you heard them sing their 4 part vocal versions from the Zappa songbook!?)
