Regarding "Yessongs" I console myself on the fact that it's a live album and I already know all the songs from it. On the other hand, should it be so great as "Seconds Out" ...

I'll take Yessongs over Seconds Out any day of the week. You need to get it. Somehow.

I'd say one or two songs on each of their "great" albums (with high rating on Progarchives) is a classic by the highest prog standards. I was also sceptical of the Americans, but "Magnum Opus" or "Song for America" are not worse than some classic GENESIS. Of course, in total KANSAS has just 4 or 5 such great songs, whereas GENESIS has 20 or 30 Wink
of course?  well that's based on your limited knowledgeWink

Perhaps, my knowledge of KANSAS is limited (I know just three of their albums). I judged from the fact that these albums ("Song for America", "The Point of Know Return" and "Leftoverture") are their most respected and only some 30% of the material on them is pure, good quality prog. But if you're suggesting that KANSAS has significantly more great songs than 4 or 5 then

1) I'd appreciate if you told me on which albums they are
and
2) If the number of high-quality prog songs produced by KANSAS is on the order of that produced by GENESIS (as you're suggesting), then why some 90% of people here would name GENESIS as one of their favourite bands, whereas for KANSAS it would be a success to find its place in top twenty for most people? Just mass ignorance? Or prejudice against the Americans?

Sorry, this is getting out of topic. I'll try to resist from temptation to continue this interesting discussion on KANSAS. Wink

This is not the place to discuss this (I know, my fault...sorry) but I'll point out that you left it unclear whether you meant that Kansas only has several good songs in general (as opposed to prog rock songs).

But anyway, here is some Grade A progressive rock from Kansas...every bit as good as the bands generally regarded as the best:

Kansas (debut album, 1974)
Belexes
Journey from Mariabronn
Apercu
Death of Mother Nature Suite

Song for America (1975)
title track
Lamplight Symphony
Lonely Street
Incomundro

Masque (1975)
Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel
All the World
Mysteries and Mayhem
The Pinnacle

Leftoverture (1976)
Miracles Out of Nowhere
Cheyenne Anthem
Magnum Opus

Point of Know Return (1977)
Closet Chronicles
Hopelessly Human

Two For the Show (1978)
this is a live album and contains many of the tracks I listed above: an excellent showcase for Kansas as one of the great live bands

Monolith (1979)
A Glimpse of Home

Somewhere to Elsewhere (2000)
Icarus II
Myriad
Distant Vision

Check out this video...a great representation of Kansas' symphonic side: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qCYIiHAhIdo

You might try with Hans from Progwalhalla, he found it for me a year ago for a fair price, still he mentioned that it was hard work finding it so no guarantees.

Looking at the current top 50 the first i haven't heard is Live scenes from DT  (i have the studio album SFAM though). Next is Godbluff from VDGG, Pawn hearts is enough for the moment.

Pretty much anything Micky and Raff heartily endorse (read: Italian Sympho); I've tried a few RPI/ISP/whatever albums and I just don't get anything out of it.

Never heard Trilogy by E.L.P. (runs for cover!!!)

Tarkus was enough for me.  In fact, I think it's the only E.L.P album I have heard.

I think that The T, as PA's unofficial spiritual leader, has some work to do!

It used to be Red, but now i have it on cd, so.. well, most italians, Dream Theater, Octopus, are the most classic i have never heard. Of course, i have heard all three, but not a whole album.

'Let's give it another fifteen seconds..'
