I can hold my own in discussions about Pink Floyd, Genesis, King
Crimson, Yes, and the other great prog bands. I haven't really ventured
out of UK prog, though, so I need some schooling in other forms of prog.

They've never really excited me in that way!

Arent we all "The King"???
But, in honesty, compared to the people on this site, i dont know so much. However, compared to the people that i know I am far more knowledgable. I came to this site to learn more about prog music and what's the best out there, and the site has helped enormously. I hope its working that way.

I'd say I'm probably somewhat below most people on here, but I've only been into prog for a couple years, whereas some of you have dedicated your entire lives to it. I think that for a 16 year old I know a pretty good amount...

I'm below most people here in knowledg (having enjoyed prog for a little under a year), but I'm much farther ahead than most of the people I know (although I do know almost everything about Pink Floyd).

frenchie:
Thanks for the moral support. Actually, I am not certain where I fall in this poll. Probably close to the "king" category from prog's inception (1966/1967) to mid-70's. Possibly in the "impressive" category for neo-prog (Marillion et al) and non-english-speaking prog (from Anglagard to Deus ex Machina). But only in the "average" category for neo-neo-prog (Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, et al) - though I'm quickly catching up with that stuff.
Still, there are areas in which I am woefully inadequate. I'm new to neo- and neo-neo-prog groups like IQ, Pendragon, Arena et al, though I'm learning. I'm very new to prog metal (Opeth, Pain of Salvation et al), and have much to learn. I also have little knowledge of Canterbury, krautrock, and groups like Can, Tangerine Dream, Soft Machine et al - though, again, I'm learning.
So I guess I am something of a know-it-all when it comes to the history of what might be called "seminal" prog - the original creators, and the first group of spin-offs (e.g., Nektar) - but only a little better, in average, with regard to other areas.
And do I need to say that this site has helped me grow in my own knowledge, to a degree I would not have thought possible? And that this is a result of both the groups and albums I am led to, and the knowledge imparted by all of you in forum threads?
Thanks for being such an informed, smart, articulate bunch of maniacs...
Peace.
