I prefer the Kayo Dots. Mostly, it's the vocals

Why are so many people against Dowsing? Even if the latter half's experiments are a bit vague for some listeners, the fact remains that the first three tracks are very accessible, as far as Kayo Dot songs go, that is. And the first five or so minutes of _OLF is rather Choirs-like, in my opinion...so there's at least 35-40 minutes of material most fans of Choirs/BLD should be able to enjoy on that album, even if they don't like the stranger stuff--which is awesome, by the way.

Apparently the last two tracks on Dowsing are too abstract and avant-garde for people to handle. Not me, of course!
Anyway, it's a toss-up that entirely depends on my mood. If I want relaxing, jazzy, psychedelic metal then I go for maudlin, but if I'm in the mood for pure avant-garde ownage, then it must be Kayo Dot.

Its not that OLF and Amaranth the Peddler are too avant garde (surely thats an oxymoron) but they are too slow, dull and repetative for most people. Anyway, we've been through this in the Toby Driver thread. BTW, completely agree with your album of the year.

I think BLD is even more mindnumbingly amazing than the two first albums. So far, album of the year.

It's not a bad album at all, but I can easily say tht it's one of the biggest musical upsets of my life. It's hard to say that Kayo Dot made the album, theres nothing that resembles the first two albums, the guitar tones arent as powerful, the energy is all gone, and Toby just doesnt seem nearly as driven (ha). In case you guys didnt know this, I hate the sound of horns, I know thats childish and stupid, but the mid-section of the album is actually pretty hard for me to listen to considering how overpowering the horns are from everything else, and thats a mistake Driver hasnt made until that album.
It's just not comparable to anything else the man has made.

It's funny how this in fact implies a comparison to the other albums.

It's extremely broad to say you hate the sound of horns...

Ugh I know, I sound like an elitist idiot when I say that, but really horns whether they be in classical, or jazzy avant garde just arent my thing. Also, it's not because of the lack of metal that makes the album not so great. I always see the lack of metal being the dividing point between Motw/Kayo Dot, from Tartar lamb, and Driver solo, therefore BLD crosses this boundry, and I dont think it fits how I listen to Kayo Dot, in fact, it's practically a whole new band.
Pnoom, you're just being an ass, stop please.

| see, that's exactly what I was thinking...I just don't understand how the horns on BLD could turn out to be a surprise...it's not that much of departure from Dowsing... listen to Immortelle, Aura, and Amaranth, then listen to all of BLD and you should hear some pretty effective similarities... Besides, BLD rocks.

Well, to be completely fair they did lose everyone except for Toby and Mia, so it pretty much is a whole new band. But anyway, Choirs was an immense departure from motW, Dowsing was an immense departure from Choirs, and BLD is an immense departure from all of those. I see a pattern there, and I love it.

Dim, you're just confusing me with the rest of STC, stop please. But seriously, I found your post ironic and pointed it out. I knew what you meant (should've used a smiley I guess). I would expect you (or anyone else) to do the same to me.
