I prefer yes, Genesis and King Crimson, particularly at their creative peaks.

Yes '71-'72 (The Yes album, Fragile & CTTE)

Genesis '73-'74 (Selling England by the pound & The lamb lies down on Broadway)

King Crimson '72-'73 (Larkes tongues in aspic & Starless and bible black)

Definitely fine albums too.

The point I was trying to make was how that particular period ('71-'74) produced some fantastic pieces of music. London must have been an exciting place to be at the time with so many great bands producing such fantastic music.

In history they call this a "cluster", a moment in time where several momentous things occur in a short period of time. Take for instance some of the persons who affected history at any particular time. For example, during the period from 1939-1945: Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin, Hitler and Einstein.

Fantomas said "Tales is the most boring stuff I ever heard..."

Them's fighting words...Granted, Tales has some filler and would have been better served as a single disc. However, there are some great moments such as the second half of "The ancient".  Levels of musicianship to which many groups wish they could rise to (and that's just Howe by his lonesome on Spanish guitar).

out of THOSE big three i would vote for Genesis because of the marvellous album "Selling EnglandBLABLABLA"
Yes is also great - especially Relayer (although no Rick but he is perfectly replaced although I would never have thought that this is possible)
i don't care much for ELP - i have all the albums and i know all albums by heart but they are overrated - keith is a very good keyboarder (i think that the biggest problem is that he is too good to be a keyboarder in a band because he outshines all the others in the band) - Greg is a very good singer but not much of a bass-player - and carl is a decent drummer but no comparison to "real" drummers like Bruford or Cobham
anyway - i would replace ELP by King Crimson in this poll (ok - but it's not my topic)

I prefer Genesis over Yes and Yes a little bit over ELP

But my favorite are

  1. Genesis
  2. Jethro Tull
  3. Gentle Giant

and after Yes, Van der graaf generator/Peter Hammill, ELP, Camel, Mike Oldfield

But The big ones are maybe Genesis, Yes, King Crimson or ELP....I think

I agree with you: they ARE the big three of the 70s as far as Prog is concerned.

It depends what mood I'm in really. At the moment, I'm all for ELP being my favourite, but I might listen to Relayer later and go nuts for Yes for the next few weeks. Nothing in the Prog world beats: Relayer, Brain Salad Surgery and Selling England by the Pound.

Speaking of "kitsch", how about Ken Russell films eh?
And Jesus said unto John, "come forth and receive eternal life..."
Unfortunately, John came fifth and was stuck with a toaster.

ELP = a lot of showing off and far too sheesy, with
some good bits. Not one of my favourites
either

Remember Joren is from the Netherlands, so
cheesy is a daily suppliment. Cheesy also means
GOUDA in dutch!

Interesting in that I consider the BIG 3 as

1. Frank Zappa and the Mothers (US-fusion)
2. Pink Floyd(UK-symphonic)
3. Tangerine Dream(GER-space)

here we see the generation gap, AGAIN!

All 3 are good, I like Yes, then ELP, then Genesis.

Here we see the root of our incompatibility.

Nothing against Genesis and ELP, they've just given me much more infrequent moments of listening pleasure than Yes (and all three take a backseat to King Crimson, IMAO).

It's nice to be able to disagree with you again...it's been too long!

Big three of any country? Well, mine would be:

1. Tangerine Dream
2. Can
3. Faust
And above all, is punk

I don't buy this 'Best 3' crap.

I just say that Floyd, King Crimson, Genesis, Yes and Soft Machine are my favs.

And if Zappa is counted as 'prog', he'll be #1, ofcourse.

Hahahahaah, I perfectly understand u. One word that makes me want to kill both myself and all others is the world is "catchy". Seriously, I get so angry of that word that I'm starting to think I have some disorder of some kind...hahahaha

Ps.  I think "cheesy" is a good word (we say "greasy" in Sweden) but I DO understand your feeling.   Ds.

One word I can't stand is 'The'. I get stomach-aches and green pimples each time I hear it.
