So let me ask: If it was on PA, do you think that the Australian Pink Floyd DVD in Liverpool doesn't deserve five stars?
Some songs are played better than Pink Floyd have ever done live and most of all they are able to combine the Waters and the Gilmour feelings as the fans would have liked them to be. There are Dogs, Comfortably Numb and High Hopes in the same concert....
I could not give a tribute band 5 stars, As i would not pay 50£ for the best replication of Mona Lisa, even if i thought it was as good as the original. But i would gladly pay a 100£ for a good original piece of art.
Sad way of thinking. For me, Mona Lise in the Louvre Museum worth the same thing as any Mona Lisa. Oh is it old and it is the original one? Who cares?
As for Australian Pink Floyd, you are IGNORING the music and saying "no I can't give 5 stars because it is a cover band". That's ridiculous to say the least.

For Australian Pink Floyd, I have never realised how good is "Learning To Fly" before hearing it from them in Rome. They added the little touch of Waters that is missing in the original. Probably as PF fans they know what the other fans expect.
I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

Following this way of thinking all the old classic music pieces would be all copies too, because there is no "original" record of them, just post-recorded by other people. But everyone enjoys it without giving a f**k who conducts the piece.

It's very difficult not to borrow from the originators of the genre.
I'll name some names...right now I'm simultaneously listening to the new Wobbler and the new Yes. One cannot help but wonder "what if Yes what still doing this?" I don't the Wobbler is a masterpiece, but it's better than Fly from Here (4 vs 3 IMO). But I can imagine someone who really loves classic prog wanting to give the Wobbler a 5.
Yezda Urfa is extremely derivative but is just as good as some of the Yes and GG they derive from. Their work easily could deserve a 5 (I actually don't remember what I gave them right now).
You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I guess I can see myself giving, say, a Genesis clone a 5-star rating if they put out an album of material which made me sit up and think "Wow, this is one of the best albums Genesis never made". Recombining old musical ideas in a brand new way to make you think about them completely differently is a skill which deserves acknowledgement - likewise, when a band actually outdoes the artists that inspired them, that deserves a nod.

Why do you care what other people think?

It's a generic feeling, but again, I wasn't meaning to
open a discussion about Marillion. Try Pink Floyd and Mostly Autumn
instead.
I think the bigger problem with Mostly Autumn is that they are the
embodiment of most of reasons people can be embarrassed to call
themselves prog fans.
I can't finish this video because the tension caused by thinking about adults actually going on stage and doing that is too much for me to bear.

That is not the same thing at all, think for a second before you make analogies. Also, if you really think nobody cares about classical performers, you haven't been paying much attention. There's a reason Renee Fleming makes like 10 times as much as other opera singers, and it's not because she's 10 times more skilled than them.

But is that a difference in your assessment of its value to you or its resale value? Because resale value is really the only functional difference between a copy and the original. Although I admit I personally have little time for tribute bands.

Semantics, semantics, semantics.
A clone by definition is IDENTICAL to the original. So shame on the OP for using that in the subject line when that's not what he/she really meant.
The real topic is 'Sounds a hellava lot like' as in YES / Star Castle. In short, sure, why not give them 5 stars. That is if your personal rating standard allows for such a thing. Given that the PA site rules for reviews are, for lack of a better metaphor, open source, then each reviewer is free to use whatever method they wish to rate albums. For me personally I have 5 areas I focus on when reviewing.
1 - Production 2 - Song Writing 3 - Originality 4 - Performance 5 - Overall Impression
In the case of live albums i consider arrangements by the band for originality. Sounding exactly like their studio release or every other live version of the same song gets low scores.
So right away if a band has that 'Sounds a hellava lot like' factor, they're sure not to get full marks from me and therefore no 5 star rating.
But as it's been stated time and time again here, reviews are subjective.
Thank you for supporting independently produced music

I agree that Wobbler shouldn't get 5* ever.
But it is possible for some of the more derivative bands to get 5*.
I disagree. I do not have their latest yet, but their first two, while having a sound reminiscent of classic seventies prog, does not sound to me like any specific band. And the feelings they evoke in me are so strong, I have to give them five stars.

I've not laughed this hard in a while. Thanks.
1. I thought that was pretty cool sounding. I absolutely fail to see any humor at all.
2. I fail to see what Henry is referring to, but can you seriously say that this is worse then adults going on a website and continuously professing their love for all thing My Little Pony. Irony is what irony does.

1. I agree, I watched it and I was waiting for them to do something other than play their music. I was expecting some LARPing to break out or something.
