The only neo-prog band I like isn't even neo-prog, really and that's The Tangent.  Well, at least their first 2 or 3 albums anyhow.

Retro-prog is better and I'd go for Anekdoten, Anglagard and some of those Swedish bands with Mellotron.

Well I listened to IQ- it was nice- I can't really say it was great unfortunately. I listened to parts of Frequency and stuff. Anything else neo-proggish someone have to offer? I'm gonna try It Bites now, they sound interesting. Is there any avantish neo prog? Is there such a thing?

Personally i really like IQs frequency, but I'd also concede that it isn't exactly breaking any new ground. I'd have said Frost were at the more diverse end of the 'neo' sub genre but you already have them on your radar.

Well, I'll be of no use as far as neo-prog is concerned but as for RIO the first thing to do is make sure you've covered all the genuine contributors to the original RIO movement (namely Henry Cow, Univers Zero, Samla Mammas Manna, Stormy Six, Etron Fou Leloublan, Art Zoyd, Art Bears and Aksak Maboul). Now I know at least most of those will already be familiar to you, but be sure not to overlook Samla, Etron Fou and Aksak - they're all quite unique and splendid and laid down a lot of the conventions (and yes, there are conventions) of avant-prog.

Additionally, how much have you explored Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart? Both are well worth spending a lot of time with.

^ I'm well aware of all bands you've mentioned. There was a time all that I just listened to Eltron a lot. I really have to check out Samla more, because I just didn't have the time to check them out. [/QUOTE]

Both with Zappa and with the Captain I'm very much a fan- though if I had to choose Beefheart would be my preferred choice (I just noticed your podcasts name!). I would go as far as to say Beefheart was the 70s biggest genius (unless you count Tim Smith but ya know Cardiacs really got their groove on in the 80s and not int the 70s). Zappa though is brilliant in almost every fashion, though he too has his f**k ups.

Well I've listened to "Dreams Of Men" on YT and while I'm not a fan of the vocals, the guitars, and the dramatic sounds, well while I'm not a fan of the sound in general, I can still sorta enjoy and appreciate it for what it is. I can't really explain why but yeah... I definitely didn't cringe- which is progress.

I can't add much neo prog to the list. but I recommend the avant-garde band Hesus Attor. Their new EP is free for download here: http://hesusattor.com/album/se-orai

Just see the reviews: it's a great band!

i think it is the folk atmosphere, and the neuances from native american, celtic, and operattic influence on the album, I love the album couse it is so dramatic, it doesent save anything, it is very in your face, almoust metal in parts, some avant ness in some songs, and very very very crispy sound and fantastic rickenbacher sound
