I like Pink Floyd just fine, although moreso post-Meddle then pre-Meddle.
I like Camel well enough too. I think that their debut is my favorite from them as it is one of their most lively. Snow Goose just happens to be one of those classic albums that doesn't do it for me. Don't get me wrong. The music is beautiful. The riff on Rhayader is excellent. But it puts me to sleep every time that I listen to it.

All Camel except Moonmadness sends me to sleep.
But i love Pink Floyd they are one of the most atmospheric bands while Camel is just boring.

I am quite surprised there has been no mentions of Asia Minor's Between Flesh and Divine, that is the first thing that pops into my head whenever this question is asked.

anything canterbury i have. and i love focus. i've pretty much listened to most of the popular bands on this site, but im desperate for something new. anything obscure i might like? also, i tend to avoid anything after the 70's (with the exception of astra) maybe i'm missing some good stuff?

How can a Floyd fan find 70s Camel boring? I can understand post 1982 camel sounding boring but not pre 1982. They are a better version of Floyd. More melodic, more talented musicians, more talented composers. Their slow songs are nicer and their other songs are more upbeat. I love their 76-78 period most and their debut is very good. I thought they took a slight step backwards on Mirage and they experimented too much with Snowgoose. But they have 2 cool outtakes from those 2 years 74 and 75 which reinforce the bands music in what I thought were weaker years. These are the songs:
These are 2 fine tunes. Hopefully they come out on future Mirage and Snowgoose remasters to boost their ratings. I'd rate the remasters as follows:
Camel-8.5/10(Aubaluba is a bit sh*tty in parts with that crappy amarican style hard rock bass playing though)
Mirage 7.5/10(with Autumn included 8/10. Lady fantasy is a bit crappy in parts and freefall has crappy bass playing)
Snowgoose-7.5/10(with Riverman included 8/10. Snowgoose has too many non vocal moments imo)
Moondmadess-9/10
Raindances-9/10
Breathless-8.5/10
A live record-8.5/10
I can see you house from here-8/10
Nude-8/10
I find Floyd a bit limited to slow bluesy music. They are pretty mediocre at instrumentals too. I really don't care for half of Dark side or even a thrid of Wish you were here. Dark side is the most overrated album in Prog history up there with Nursery crymes. Here's my thoughts on Floyd albums which I have
Saucerful of secrets-7.5/10
Atom heat mother-7.5/10
Meddle-8/10
Obscured by clouds-8.5/10
Dark side of the moon-7/10(Money, Any colour, Great gig, are mainly boring. Us and them, Brain, Eclipse need to be in the mood to listen to)
Wish you were here 7.5/10(Wish you were here and Have a cigar are boringish)
Animals-8.5/10
The wall-8/10
Camel clearly better imo
Ward is a much better drummer than Mason
Bardens is a noticeably better keyboardist than Wright
Latimer is a more talented, better sounding and more various guitarist than Gilmour
Sinclair is one of the best bass players in prog, Ferguson and Waters are reasonable
Camel were much more jazz and classical influenced than Floyd. Floyd are closer to blues than anything. Camel produced far greater melodies. I've never heard Floyd produce fun instrumentals such as Supertwister, Sixate, Rhyader, Migration, Flight of snowgoose, Chord change, Skylines etc
